This book takes place in 1794 Paris, London 1797, 1802 Paris, and 1818 London with many of the same characters, spies and baddies. ( ) This is a popular book in the series, but I felt like it was actually more plodding than the others. It spends quite a bit of the book covering like 15 years in flashbacks, and a lot of what we're told in them had already been revealed in the previous books, so it just wasn't all that engaging to hear it repeated. The couple was fairly likable, I'd already become attached to the hero as a side character, though the heroine was a little more prickly and difficult for me to feel fondly toward. They had some nice moments though, sprinkled in here and there. But overall there wasn't that much added interest that I didn't already know, and the case for why they couldn't just be together already got weaker and weaker until it just felt dragged out and that they were unnecessarily wasting time they could have spent together. It's a decent book, but I ended up feeling a little disappointed.
"Beautifully flawed, intensely human characters, a deadly puzzle, and a love that survives incredible odds combine to make this another emotionally riveting page-turner from Bourne (The Forbidden Rose), whose novels always deliver. Fans of historical romance will be all over this one." Pertence a SérieSpymaster (4)
