The Hurricane was the RAF's first monoplane fighter and saw significant combat during the fight over France and the Battle of Britain. One of its principal opponents in 1940 was the Bf 110 twin-engined, two-seat heavy fighter. Following the invasion of France, these fighters clashed regularly as the RAF's Hurricanes attacked German bomber formations defended by Bf 110. Although the Hurricane had the upper hand when it came to manoeuverability, the Bf 110 outclassed it in terms of fire power, with its mix of machine guns and cannon. This is the story of the dramatic battles in the skies over France and the Channel as Britain desperately tried to hold back the German onslaught from her shores.… (mais)

Tony Holmes podrobně rozebírá technické parametry a silné a slabé stránky obou aktérů válečného dění, popisuje jejich vývoj, vysvětluje příčiny, proč byly obratné a výkonné Hurricany deklasovány v jistých momentech bitvy německými Bf 110, analyzuje důvody, proč střetávání na nebi nad jižní Anglií dlouho nemělo vítěze, a především objasňuje, proč se nakonec hrdinou bitvy přece jen staly Hurricany, zatímco Bf 110 navzdory své podstatně silnější výzbroji složené z kanonů a kulometů selhaly. Kniha je vybavena množstvím dobových snímků a mapami. ( )

Good overview of the combat systems and tactics employed by the Hurricane and Bf-110 pilots. Standard Osprey, good intro to the subject, inevitably leaves you wanting to know more on the subject. ( )
