"For princess Miya Black home is Clover Island, a tiny dot of a place not even named on most maps. Founded fifteen years ago by her parents, ex-pirate Tomas Black and ex-princess Lilith Brightburn, it's a place for second chances and new beginnings. It's there that Miya was born, there she grew up, and there she now lives, spending her days riding with her best friend, practicing swordsmanship with her fake uncle, sailing with her father, and avoiding book lessons with her mother. To Miya it's the best place in the entire world, and she knows how lucky she is to have it. So when her home is threatened Miya doesn't just sit around sulking. She's the princess of Clover Island, with the blood of pirate legends running through her veins, and she'll do whatever it takes to protect her kingdom"--Publisher's website. At first I found the Miya Character a little tedious but then how many 14 year old tomboys aren't. This actually ended up being not a bad story. Princess Miya Black is off on an adventure when her previously unknown half brother Sola arrives telling a tale of his island being attacked. Miya and her brother decide to go and find her pirate grandparents for aide when the find out the priate that attacked her brothers people are going from island to island enslaving everyone as the go. The actions scenes are very well written and after a while the book starts to flow. I see that there is a part 2 and 3 or this series and would love to read them. Good Job and not a bad way to spend an afternoon in the sun. ( )

This was a good YA fantasy. It had a strong female character, who kids could look up to. Miya is an active adventerous pirate princess who is very loyal to her family and home. Some parts were a bit dry, but overall an enjoyable read. The pirate history was a good touch. ( )

Miya is the typical stubborn teenager but with good qualites (protectiveness, thirst for adventure) added. This was a good story with enough action to keep you reading. ( )

This is a fantasy/action book for young readers; although adults can enjoy it as well. The heroine of the book is fourteen year old Miya Black. She is a princess and a daughter of a pirate king. The book focuses on her adventures as she tries to help her parents save their island home from a pirate who wants to conquer it. While it is a little far fetched to think that a fourteen year old could do some of the things she did in the book; I liked to see a female rolemodel that girls can look up to.

The book was action packed and moved at a pretty good clip. I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to any one who wants a little pirate action in their lives. ( )

Miya Black Pirate Princess: Adventure Dawns is a fun little romp by Ben White. Miya Black s the daughter of Queen Lilith and Tomas Black, ex-pirate. The story opens on Miya's fourteenth birthday and, much to her dismay, there is to be a ball to celebrate. Miya hates balls, she hates dresses, she hates all the responsibilities that come with being a princess. In fact, all she really wants is to be a pirate like her dad and have lots of adventures but that seems pretty unlikely - that is, until dreaded pirated Badger Pete starts enslaving the inhabitants of the outer islands. Soon, Miya and her half-brother, Sola set out to find help and the adventures really begin.

This was an enjoyable book. Miya, is for the most part likable, although, after awhile her bossiness towards every one including her mom and dad became a little annoying. At one point, her mother disciplines her for speaking out in a parlay and I found myself thinking, "it's about time". Of course, this is from an adult and a mother so my opinion might be a little biased. I think young girls from about 7 to 11 would love Miya's impetous nature and her refusal to back down no matter what the odds. Although, occasionally Sola is forced to save Miya, in the end, it is she who must save everyone. The question is can she do it?

Despite, Miya's already noted bossiness, I think she is a great role model for little girls: she may be a princess but she has the heart of a pirate, she may not be beautiful but she is always complete in herself no matter what others say, she does what she thinks is best and, even when she's wrong, she never gives up, she is brave and loyal and a good friend. No matter the odds, in the end, she is what we all should strive to be - her own person.

Miya Black, Pirate princess: Adventure Dawns is the first in a series of Miya Black adventures and I highly recommend it to any little girl who would rather be a pirate than a princess. ( )
