An alien race calls on one woman to revive mankind after Earth's apocalypse in this science fiction classic from the award-winning author of Parable of the Sower.   Lilith Iyapo has just lost her husband and son when atomic fire consumes Earth--the last stage of the planet's final war. Hundreds of years later Lilith awakes, deep in the hold of a massive alien spacecraft piloted by the Oankali--who arrived just in time to save humanity from extinction. They have kept Lilith and other survivors asleep for centuries, as they learned whatever they could about Earth. Now it is time for Lilith to lead them back to her home world, but life among the Oankali on the newly resettled planet will be nothing like it was before.   The Oankali survive by genetically merging with primitive civilizations--whether their new hosts like it or not. For the first time since the nuclear holocaust, Earth will be inhabited. Grass will grow, animals will run, and people will learn to survive the planet's untamed wilderness. But their children will not be human. Not exactly. Featuring strong and compelling characters and exploring complex themes of gender and species, Octavia E. Butler presents a powerful, postapocalyptic interplanetary epic, as well as a ray of hope for humanity.   This ebook features an illustrated biography of Octavia E. Butler including rare images from the author's estate. … (mais)

I see why now.

Dawn starts with humanity wiping itself mostly out and the titular Lilith waking up in the next best thing to a cell on what she later learns is an alien spacecraft. The aliens (the Oankali) are alien, with a culture and lifestyle built around exchanging genetic material with races across the universe, changing themselves radically along the way. They've given humanity a chance to survive--but only if we change ourselves along the way.

It's a really interesting look into exactly what makes us human and what cost is worth paying for survival. In a few hundred pages, we deal with xenophobia, slavery, freedom, psychology, humanity (and our tendency to self destruct), and sexuality, all through the character of Lilith, one of the most 'human' protagonists I've read in a while. She's stuck in a strange, wonderful, and terrible situation--and just has to make the best of it. It's quite a world.

Strange book. Well worth the read. It's only a bummer that it took so long to get to. I'm really curious where [b:Adulthood Rites|116249|Adulthood Rites (Xenogenesis, #2)|Octavia E. Side note: It's particularly weird reading this book just after [b:Third Shift: Pact|16183060|Third Shift Pact (Shift, #3)|Hugh Howey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1359195368l/16183060._SY75_.jpg|22091874]. In both cases, humanity has done their very best to wipe ourselves out and in both cases, our point of view is in the followup. In the Silo books, the tone is somewhat cynical and negative, people trying to do their best to save humanity but with the feeling of 'what's even the point'. In Xenogenesis, we're saved from outside and have to fight for our survival--but there's less question about if we'll survive... and more an exploration about what it will cost. ( )

Awakened in the future when humanity has managed to ruin the Earth through nuclear war, Lilith eventually starts to awaken others to begin repatriation and repopulation; however, she has to deal with the alien species who is saving them, looking to exchange genes (breed), and the resentment of her fellow humans. Though a tad dated, I'd give this book 4.5 stars. Very enjoyable read. ( )

The only other Sci-fi series I've tried (and loved) is N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth Trilogy. Having enjoyed Butler's iconic novel Kindred, I transported back in time to 1987 for this first book of in her Exogenesis Trilogy. In it, Earth has been wracked by wars and nuclear destruction, and Lilith, a Black woman, is on a spaceship commanded by Oankali, aliens who have made Earth habitable again. They have also rescued a number of humans, with the intention of combining genes and repopulating the dead planet with new and improved beings. They recognize the two incompatible characteristics of humans: intelligence and commitment to hierarchy. Lilith becomes entwined with the young alien Nikanj and a human, Joseph, and is designated as the leader of the humans, to train them in the environment of the spaceship and in survival skills for their pioneer lives. I can see parallels here to the concept of bearing interracial children to help to heal the world. The contrast between reading Butler in 2021 as a Black feminist force in contemporary literature and seeing Lilith portrayed in the cover art as a white woman (with no author photo or mention of her ethnicity) is startling. Meh. The first few pages are great, but then things get too slow and sentimental. It’s hard to understand all the hype. Anyway, the story clearly has potential so I’m giving book #2 a try. ( )
