When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back. Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel. Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl. Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Sunshine por Robin McKinley (Utilizador anónimo)
Utilizador anónimo: Both feature a plucky teenage heroine and an atypical love interest. Neither involves sappy eyeroll-inducing romantic dialogue. As I read Angelfall, I was immediately reminded of Sunshine, however Angelfall is a much better book. If you liked Sunshine, you might like Angelfall. I personally hated Sunshine, but enjoyed Angelfall.… (mais)

I'd added this one to my to-read list because it was highly rated for the post-apocalyptic genre. I didn't realize that it was YA Romance. So basically, Twilight with Angels. Ok, not THAT bad. It's just that, as a 47 y/o man, I'm probably not fully in the target demographic. Luckily, the YA Romance part of it was definitely on the lighter side as far as actual longing and pining go, but I could see that it could be ramped up in the sequels.
The story of angels coming to earth and destroying humanity could, frankly, sound a little off-putting to me, as an atheist. However, I gave it a shot, and the first 75% of the book was a bit too dragging on the slow side. But... that last 25% is where the pedal hit the floor and the book became simulatenously awesome, creepy, horrifying and utterly captivating. (For those who've read the book, without getting spoilery, I'm referring to the point when Penryn goes into the basement.)
So I've rated this on a roughly split basis - the first 75% is 2 stars, the last 25% is 5 stars. Using my advanced highly subjective math skills, that puts us at 3 stars.

Audiobook notes - the narrator (Caitlin Davies) did a fine job, with the only exception being the mispronounciation of a certain angel (Belial as "Bill -ee- ill" instead of "B'Lyle") ( )

READ THIS BOOK, my husband bought it for me because it was on sale for our Kindle a few months ago. I have a hard time getting into new genres/authors but our internet went out for a whole weekend so I decided to read it. I could not put it down from start to finish, I even read it while walking around grocery shopping. The reviews on amazon for it are spectacular as well.
There is so much going on and different parts of the story to explore and the characters are great and Im dying for book #2 right now!

Edit: Aug, 7, 2014 -- this is STILL my all time favorite book EVER!
I want to fangirl all over it and do whatever I can to get everyone to read it! There is supposed to be a movie coming out someday, so read it before it explodes into popularity! DO IT NOW!

Seventeen-year-old Penryn lives with crazy mother and her wheelchair-bound sister in a post-apocalyptic Silicon Valley, trying to survive human refuge/street gangs and vindictive angels seeking revenge for humans killing the Archangel Gabriel. Paige is kidnapped by angels and Penryn saves Raffe, an angel whose wings have been sheared by these same angels, hoping Raffe can help her find Paige. The two join forces, traveling to the angels’ “aerie” in San Francisco to rescue Paige and repair Raffe’s wings; along the way, they are captured by a dangerously anarchic army of the human resistance and find much more than either suspected. Suspenseful, but a bit too much romance for me. ( )

It's been a while since I've read a book with angels in it and that's because the last angel books I read were the Fallen series by Lauren Kate, and I thought those were pretty horrible and could have been 2 books and not the 3 or 4 that the author chose to have... but I digress. This first book in the Penryn series was a little better than those last angel books I read. the author gives good descriptions so I was able to feel like I had a good idea of what people, places, and things looked like which I appreciate in this crazy post-apocalyptic world where angels have basically taken over.

There were, however, a few things I just couldn't quite get over which had me initially thinking that I was going to give the book 3 stars tops. The dialogue between Penryn and Raffe had me cringeing from time to time. It was so cheesey and littered with puns that literally no one would actually say. I'm not sure if this was the author's attempt at trying to show that Penryn specifically couldn't find witty or sarcastic things to say to Raffe because of his good looks ans charm, or if the author is just that awful and creating meaningful and driven dialogue.

Secondly, the author tries so hard to not create insta love that the book probably would have been better if there was actual insta love. Penryn's thoughts become pretty conflicted from almost the get go about being attracted to an angel (which are supposed to be a hated creature by society for what angels have done to Earth and humanity). it would have been better if the author had just created the insta love and saved us all the teenage angst that she went through.

However, even though I had an issue with that almost insta love feeling, I did appreciate that the main focus of the story kept to the idea that a human girl (Penryn) is trying to find and save her family versus focusing on a love between human and Angel.

The last scene ended up saving this book for me. I thought the ideas were pretty original and that the closing fight scene was pretty epic. The fight scene alone probably brought the book up the last .25 stars all by itself. I will be continuing on with the series, but I'm not sure if I will completely finish reading it. ( )

RATING: 5/5

My very own Raffe: the too-hot-for-his-own-good: Jake Madden

Note: I bookmarked it like 20 times and now I couldn't come up with a favorite quote it is so hard to choose!

This book is a true hidden gem: I didn’t know what to expect; maybe a fluffy read, maybe a badly written self-published book that I would mildly like; but certainly not to fall crazy and madly in love as in where-were-you-my-whole-life and how-am-I-supposed-to-go-on-without-you, kind of love.

I had to lock myself in my room for several hours, gathering my thoughts and reliving all the events and trying to come with a proper review, one that would reflect the amazing experience I had with this book, using “coherent” sentences instead of an infinite stream of “awwws” and “wows” and “oh-my-god”s.

That’s gonna be hard.

Dystopia has never been my cup of tea, but now I know that it’s all in the writing, first with Delirium and Lauren Oliver’s poetic prose and now Angelfall.

The novel’s idea was at first a bit shocking: the Angels of the apocalypse came down to Earth and brought it to an end no one was ready for. The world is now reduced to piles of ashes and starving humans trying to survive by all means.

The post-apocalyptic world Mrs. Ee created was original and amazingly constructed: the chaos, the desperation, the madness, the eeeevil angels… it had it all and then some. She knew how to picture the anarchy and the horror of it in vivid images that haunted me with their intensity. And what surprised me is that I loved it even though I’m not a big fan of horror.

My love got bigger the second I met Raffe and Penryn.

A well-built world should come with extraordinary characters and the author didn’t disappoint and excelled beyond imagination.

Penryn reminded me a lot of Buffy as a matter of fact: an awesome heroine. She’s kick-ass, sarcastic, hilarious, and headstrong, and yet she’s naïve enough as any teenage girl to fall for the wrong guy. She’s a loyal daughter and big sister and her fight to get her sister back is impressive and remarkable. Sincerely, I don’t know if I would go to such lengths (like making a pact with the enemy) just to save a member of my family.

Her journey with the highly-frustrating and irritable Raffe was amazing to read and live; they are unique: both are strong, witty, and stubborn. They couldn’t stay away from each other, of course their reasons were different at the beginning, but it changed later to something very powerful and heart-tearing; it hadn’t started with fluffy hearts and a love-at-first-sight but their attraction was undeniable. It is the most explosive that I ever read about, it built slowly, growing and evolving waiting to explode and the tension was almost palpable, all the time they drove each other crazy with a sweet torture.

Raffe…

Well, I can’t say it enough: I’m in love with this guy semi-god. He’s every bit as delicious as the guy above (that’s how I imagined him); he was frustrating at first treating penryn like a child, rolling his eyes at her every now and then. He, then, sensed her courage and determination to save her sister (even though her chances at surviving were slim) and earned his respect and admiration as he risked his life many times to save her. Inevitably, his feelings turned into a tempting blaze he couldn’t fight anymore no matter how hard he kept pushing her away.

Watching him suffer the forbiddance of his feelings (as sadistic as this may sounds) was my undoing. Those last chapters were a torture to read, I didn’t want to finish it and part ways with this ending.

I.WANT.THE.SECOND.BOOK.NOW

So much for the “proper” review I was hoping for… *sigh*
