The wealth of new material recovered in recent years from the Ancient Near East by archaeological excavation and investigation and the discovery, decipherment and translation of a number of texts hitherto unknown, has made possible a clearer knowledge and understanding of the religion of this crucial region from prehistoric times to the end of the Bronze Age, and of all that has emerged from it in the higher faiths of mankind.
