Hey there, Mr. Howell " Hearing himself thus called, Mr. Howell stopped. "Where are you going?" asked Smith. "Down in the field to look after the stock." "Two-legged stock, isn't it--carrying guns, eh?" said Smith. "Cattle," replied Howell. "Pretty tough breed of cattle, eh? Rob railroad trains, eh?" continued Smith. "What do you mean?" asked Howell, turning and walking slowly back toward the house. "I mean just this," replied Smith. "I mean that you can't steal a march 011 me. You were going out into the woods to tell Evans and Sontag that we are here, and to tell them to keep away. I am onto your game, sir. As a Deputy United States Marshal, I arrest you, John Howell." HowelPs face turned pale, partly with surprise; but more with anger. "Come into this room and sit down," continued Smith. Howell did so. "Where's your wife?" asked Smith.
