I think it would appeal to pre-teens who are interested in drama because it is about a seventh grader who gets the lead in the school play but she has to overcome many obstacles. She has to deal with her father's full blown depression all by herself while caring for her younger brother and keeping her grades up. "Take care of my boys, baby girl. Take care of them till I get home." That's what Serena's mom told her before she left on a business trip... but she was in a car accident and never came home. Now Serena's trying to deal with her grief while she keeps up with everything else - taking care of her little brother and a dad who won't get out of bed, schoolwork (her grades are slipping), play practice (Serena's playing the lead), grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning... Serena's dad has "had the blue" (as her little brother would say) from time to time, but before, her mom was always around to take care of him. Can Serena see them through until her dad feels better or will her dad's blue swallow them all this time? This book is a great choice for tween readers who are wanting something that's edgy but still tween-appropriate. I'd hand it to tweens wanting sad stories and I'll confess that this book had me in tears at multiple parts. An innocent love storyline between Serena and her Spanish class buddy Elijah (who keeps saying really sweet things to her in Spanish) lightened the tone now and then. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

I read Silhouetted by the Blue in one sitting and loved it. The quality of the writing is excellent, especially the dialogue. There is a lot of pressure on the main charcter of this book and the pacing of the writing makes this stick out even more. I think the popularity of the book would be considerable, especially given how the characters deal with family trouble with which many people could identify.
I liked this booky by Traci Jones and would suggest it to others without reservation. The role of depression in Serena's life as well as her brother and father was rather compelling. The "blue" metaphor worked for me and I liked the family grew aware of the father's depression only over time. That seems realisic and makes the conflict more believable. The often strained but always caring relationship between her and her little brother was one of my favorite parts. I responded both the Serena's strength and fragility. The final few pages were as emotional a ride as I've had from a book recently.
