Shrubs and trees for the Australian gardens is the first comprehensive and authoritative reference book on shrubs and trees to be published in Australia. This fourth edition has been almost completely re-written, and there are now over 3,500 different shrubs and trees from this country, New Zealand and overseas, described in detail and classified for growing under every possible condition. Written by an expert horticulturist and botanist (see back flap), the language of the book is simple and plain. In this edition names have been brought up to date, and a very large number of new plants, chiefly Australian natives which are rapidly coming into cultivation, have been added. To conserve space, especially in the Australian shrub section, some of the less familiar common names have been dropped. A feature of this edition is the correct printing of all 'Cultivar Names' in order to conform with Internation Rules of Plant Nomenclature now adopted by all countries. At the suggestion of Sir Edward Salisbury, C.B.E., D.SC, F.R.S., who reviewed an earlier edition, and for the benefit of an increasing number of readers overseas, the botanical families of all Australian species have been included. Precise details for recognition, added advice on cultural requirements and name revisions are also included, making this volume the most up to date reference work of its kind. Most of the shrubs and trees referred to may be known by a standardized common name, and every name, common or botanical, has its place in the comprehensive index system of over 6,650 names.… (mais)
