This novel - which seems to be based at least loosely on the lives of the sculptor Ingeborg Hunzinger (Franck's grandmother) and her children - rather unexpectedly marries a Werther-like tragic-poet plot with the same sort of conflict between generations that informs a lot of other German fiction from after the Wende. Thomas and Ella, born in the closing stages of World War II, experience the DDR as a closed, prison-like society, full of abusive uses of power, whilst their mother, a communist, Jewish sculptor who spent the Nazi years in exile or in hiding, sees the Workers' and Peasants' State as a golden opportunity and the only bastion against a repeat of the horrors of the thirties. It's a book that is constantly on the edge of romantic and political cliche, especially in the later chapters after the Wall goes up, but it is saved (just about) by the immediacy and oddness of the children's life in their very unmotherly mother's Berlin-Rahnsdorf studio. (Apart from anything else, there is the bizarre way so many of the scenes have to be played in the nude - it's like finding yourself in the middle of a German park on a summer Sunday...) ( )

Set in Post World War II East Berlin (the wall is erected during the period of the story), this is a dark tale of a brother and sister who are alternately ignored and and taunted by their mother.

It is bleak and hard to read, not only because of the disturbing nature of the story, but also because of the disjointed way of presenting it. It wanders from person to person, from reality to imagination, and it is really difficult to follow. I kept wanting it to be more mythic or more realistic, but it was a mishmash. ( )

Ostberlin, Ende der 50er Jahre. Die Geschwister Ella und Thomas wachsen auf sich allein gestellt im Haus der Bildhauerin Käthe auf. Sie sind einander Liebe und Gedächtnis, Rücken an Rücken loten sie ihr Erwachsenwerden aus. Ihre Unschuld und das Leben selbst stehen dabei auf dem Spiel. Käthe, eine kraftvolle und schroffe Frau, hat sich für das kommunistische Deutschland entschieden. Leidenschaftlich vertritt sie die Erfindung einer neuen Gesellschaft, doch ihr Einsatz fordert Tribut. Im Schatten scheinbarer Liberalität setzen Kälte und Gewalt Ella zu. Während sie mal in Krankheit flieht und mal trotzig aufbegehrt, versucht Thomas sich zu fügen, doch nur schwer erträgt er die Erniedrigungen und flüchtet in die unglückliche Liebe zu Marie.

Elementen van haar eerdere roman ‘De Middagvrouw’ zijn ook in dit boek aanwezig. De eerste aandacht van de moeder gaat niet uit naar haar kinderen, maar richt zich uitsluitend op haar werk als beeldhouwer en op de idealen van het Oost-Duitsland na de tweede wereldoorlog. De foto van Ulbricht hangt aan de muur !

Het boek omvat een familiegeschiedenis die zich van meet af aan afspeelt in een sfeer van verzwijgen en onderdrukken. De alleenstaande moeder torst als jodin een belast verleden waarover nauwelijks wordt gesproken en de kinderen ontwerpen hun eigen groeiscenario. Hun beginnende volwassenheid draagt de scheuren van de moeder en de last van een verloren jeugd die niet meer terugkomt. Het zal nooit meer zijn zoals het was in de kinderjaren: ‘Kom laten we van de stilte genieten, Ella leunde tegen hem aan. Hij knikte, we gaan rug aan rug zitten en jij vertelt over vader’

Franck heeft een indrukwekkende roman gemaakt. Soms een gedetailleerd verslag, dan weer in een wat bedekte of suggererende stijl. Geen waardeoordelen maar observaties die een grote beklemming oproepen.
Een triest begin en een dramatisch eind. ( )
