Palacio does a great job not only writing from the perspective of a 5th grader, but writing from the perspective of multiple fifth graders, each with their own beliefs, experiences, and personalities. Still, I had planned to rate it a 3-3.5, until I got to the last chapter (which I believe was not actually included in the original release of the novel). Telling the story from the perspective of the young villain and humanizing him as she did so was a great feat, but the absolute best was seeing his transformation at his grandmother's story of being hidden from the Nazis in WW2. The grandmother's story was gripping and real; the reader had no idea that this young adult author could so adeptly switch to historical fiction. ( )

This book should be mandatory reading for all middle school age kids, who read English. Auggie Pullman has a horrible facial deformity, even after 18 operations, but decides to attend middle school after many years of home schooling. Told from several characters viewpoint, this is about being friends and what true friendship is about, and best of all, has a genuine feeling about the events and relationships. ( )

Five hankies. Fantastic book. Tremendously moving and full of subtle insight. August Pullman is a kind of Owen Meany for the elementary and middle school set, and Palacio writes about him and his cohorts with sensitivity, showing them (and their parents) as the complex humans that they are. Although there are a few moments that are a little too close to being "made for television," they still worked for me, and somehow never seemed trite. One note: I started out listening to the audio of this upon the recommendation of another librarian, but the actor's voice bugged me, so I switched over to the book, and am glad that I did. It has some inventive illustrations and quotations and one section of text messages that are better appreciated in print. ( )

Shall we make a new rule of life...always to try to be a little kinder than is necessary? -J.M. Barrie, The Little White Bird
"Kinder than is necessary," he [Mr. Tushman] repeated. What a marvelous line, isn't it? Kinder than is necesary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed. Why I love that line, that concept, is that it reminds me that we carry with us, as human beings, not just the capacity to be kind, but the very choice of knindness. -Palacio, p. 300

"It glimmered in their kindness to him ... Such a simple thing, kindness. Such a simple thing. A nice word of encouragment given when needed. An act of friendship. A passing smile." -Palacio, p. 300.
