Amazing Book. Loved the character of celaena. Overall a great book and a must-read. ( )

Teen fiction (girl assassin with knights and armored battles and stuff). This series has gotten rave reviews from some librarians and probably would satisfy fans of Kristen Cashore, et al., with its strong female protagonist (that apparently, loves to wear fancy dresses) but I generally expect my attention to be grabbed within the first 10 pages, but I mostly just got boring world building and some threats of violence. Had I been more interested in the usual oppressive royal families and their guards, I might have stayed on past 27 pages, but I was not impressed (and am not all that interested in reading mass amounts of teen fiction unless it is really good), so there you are.

This appears adequate but did not stand out among the other teen fic out there. Still, the series does have its fans and may be worth recommending for that reason. ( )

Celaena has been stuck in a labour-death camp for a year, the price of being betrayed as the most notorious assassin in the kingdom. Now, she finally has a chance at freedom. But it's a long way off a very dark and trecherous road, and enemies lurk behind many a smiling face and shadow.

There is romance in this book. And dissapointingly enough, it's a bit of a love triangle. But Celaena is more rational and thoughtful than I thought she'd be, and the romantic situation wasn't nearly as cringy as so many other triangles you see in literature.

There's a lot introduced in this book at leaves questions. And its funny seeing an protagonist who would honestly rather not know 😂. ( )

I had no idea what I was getting into when reading this book. This does not make me think of Cinderella at all, if this is supposed to be compared to that.

Celaena Sardothien, is an extraordinary teenage assassin, which if you can pass this premise is confident with her skills as well as her looks. I absolutely loved her sense of humor. All her smart little quips and comments to try to annoy the Prince and Captain. LOVEEEEDDD it. I would find myself quite amused, and admired her sense of self-control but she would also still able to stand up for herself when she felt enough was enough. It may be biased but I felt she was very relatable to me. A very strong minded protagonist, heroine with the personality that I think any girl could look up to. Nobody is perfect and I liked the way the author portrayed her, that although she's an assassin, she's also just a young female with regular weaknesses and insecurities. She's an assassin, but she's like seventeen, she's not invincible, the portrayal of her that she is also human with normal likes and dislikes.

Clearly she was my favorite character of this book, but I heavily enjoyed the light shades of Dorian and Chaol. Including the hint of possible love triangle, constantly kept me trying to figure out who she actually liked. Which now that I finished the book, I'm still not sure who she actually likes. haa

The structure of the book has a mixture of Point Of Views, which I particularly liked. The main POV was first person protagonist and short POVs from a couple of the side characters. The only qualm I had was the fact that there was some confusion on the reader part where I wasn't sure whose POV it was or if it was first or third person.

I can't wait to read the sequels and novellas. ( )

It's easy to dismiss a book with a teenage assassin hero, but I gave this one a chance and I enjoyed it.

The protagonist has flaws and is occasionally dense, but she works within the world of the story. The book is entertaining, if a little silly, with a slightly-strained love triangle and quite a bit of awkward dialogue. The strengths of this book are in the likeable characters' interactions with one another and the interesting side-plots.

The villains are so flat that anytime another character has to interact with them things get a little dreary, but there are hints of a more interesting deeper conflict and story set-up for sequels. ( )
