Blue has forever been told that if she ever kisses her true love, he will die. She doesn't doubt this for a minute. So without knowing who her potential true love may be Blue decided long ago that it would be much easier to just not kiss anybody, a much easier task at six then it was turning out to be at sixteen. But Blue was determined not to fall in love. Then on St Mark's Eve at the spirit watch Blue sees her first ever spirit. In the next twelve months the boy that spirit belongs to is going to die and Blue, having been able to see him, is either his true love, the person who kills him or both.

Gansey may seem the typical spoilt, rich kid with his expensive car, fine clothes and ability to solve most any problem by throwing money at it, but not everything in life can be solved with money. Surrounding himself with an eclectic group of friends, Gansey and his fellow Raven Boys have spent the last several years searching for the impossible. An ancient Welsh King lying in rest, sleeping for hundreds of years, hidden along the paths of time who will grand a wish to the one who awakens him. While each has their own reasons for joining in the search, for one it will lead to their death.

Raven Boys draws together a cast of psychics, students, explorers, friends and hidden enemies. An exciting tale of friendships, loyalties, predictions and murder. Where four Raven boys and one Blue girl are discovering that together they can find magic and mystery in the world. A world where the threat of a kiss is as heart stopping as the promise of death, where damning prophecies lead to true love and the search for an ancient king sleeping will lead to another world. This is a story where magical realism seamlessly mingles with ancient myths resulting in an engaging and complex beginning to an alluring and brilliant new series. ( )

I read this book on a recommendation from my sis-in-law. She, and a coworker, told me the book was "subtle". I didn't quite understand what they meant until after I read it (and they explained it a second time). During the read, I kept waiting for the "real action" to begin. When the book ended, I looked back and could see the ups and downs much easier. In this way, it was subtle. The book is meant to be read as a series, I think. I haven't finished the series, so I cannot be sure that the plot point I'm waiting for happens near the very end of it. However, THIS book definitely reads like "part one".

At the moment, I feel committed to following the story to its natural conclusion. I do NOT yet feel enamored with any of the characters. There are parts of the story I truly enjoy, but I am not in love with the world just yet. Perhaps this is part of the "subtlety" that is Stiefvater's writing style. I hope that, at least by the end of it, I have found a quiet love with some part of the story.

I will update the state of my enamor-ment as I review books to come. ( )

Local town girl gets entangled with boys from the local prep school. Throw in some occult: her mother and aunts can foretell the future. The preppies all have issues, but their leader Gansey seeks the final resting place of a long dead European king, whom he believes is buried in the Virginian hills, having travelled on a ley line. Too long and wandering, and Blue's interest in more than one boy is disturbing. I liked what Stiefvater did with Noah -- highlight of the book for me. ( )

With an intriguing plot and a group of lovable, peculiar characters, The Raven Boys provides a sharp and mysterious look into a work of ghosts and supernatural myths-turn-truths.

I liked how romance was not a major driver of the plot (it was actually quite minimal), and I liked how Stiefvater both answered some questions and introduced some more without making the whole thing confusing by the conclusion. ( )

I was debating between 3 or 4 stars, but decided that regardless of my feelings and enjoyment of the book, it is solidly a 3 star novel. It is a lot of fun and I made sure to check out the sequel from the library before I finished The Raven Boys so I could binge uninterrupted, but this book does have faults that lands it as an unenjoyable, must read 3 star book.

It is fun, but slow to start. I almost DNF, but kept on reading anyway and am glad I chose to do so, but I can't recommend this book without the caveat of its slow start. Also, the summary puts the focus all on Blue and her story, but it is an ensemble cast with the story revolving more around Gansey. There are also no teenage girls in this book, the only girl close to Blue's age being Declan's girlfriend, who Adam calls "Girlfriend" in his POV chapters because she is seen as an expendable fling. The women in Blue's life, her mother, aunt, and her mother's friends, are well done and their intelligence isn't degraded to prop up the teens, so it could be worse. But I wish there was at least two teenage girls in this book. I like reading YA for the abundance of female characters ubiquitous in YA that, in other genres, you can reliably find in romance or women's fiction, so the false advertisement irritated me. In another vein, public schools vs private schools are a hot topic in the book, but we only see the boys in class once. It's really weird. Also the kids are also so obsessed with money and their careers that I mentally thought of them as university students because it made more sense than high school students. ( )
