Imagine touring the grounds of an Agatha Christie English manor with P.G. Wodehouse as your guide, only to find Lon Chaney Jr. wandering the estate. A lively, literary twist on the whodunit, Barking Mad: A Reginald Spiffington Mystery is a unique pastiche of these three traditions, woven together by the cheeky, culinarily-driven playboy protagonist Reginald, who is determined to find the murderer responsible for abruptly ending his luxury weekend at Huffsworthy Hall.… (mais)

ChillnND: I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman style comedy fantasy and I found Barking Mad to be not dissimilar in its level of wit and humor combined with the supernatural/fantasy genre. Barking aims a bit more at good-natured parody of Agatha Christie and similarly styled mysteries. I looked forward to every minute of reading it and hope the author gives us some more Spiffington mysteries.… (mais)

I adored this book! Marvelous, light, funny, thrilling and engaging, I couldn't put it down. It's delightful, full of whimsy, but with depth and emotion, the mystery keen and intriguing. A proper who-dun-it with a dash of romance and chuckles, topped with a twist of wolfy bite. If P.G.Wodehouse and Agatha Christie had a child who wrote werewolf novels, this would be it. I wait, with eagerness, for more! ( )

Reginald Spiffington is already dreading the weekend. His friend Moony has asked Reggie out to a country manor to assist Moony in getting the attention of a particular girl. Once there though, things get out of hand very quickly. A murder, a love interest, and a werewolf are only part of the trials Reggie must withstand. With the help of his valet Pelham, Reggie is determined to find the killer, help Moony get the girl, and eat some delicious food.

This book was so much fun! It has the amazing ability to pay homage to the great mystery novels of the past, while providing just enough mocking of their style without being mean. Reggie seems like a pretty fun chap, and I couldn't help but think I would like to spend some time with him. He handles everything as calmly and smoothly as possible. Of course, he would be helpless without his man Pelham. Pelham has an interesting past, and I was really interested in this. Pelham is definitely the kind of person I'd want around in my time of need. Mimsy was great, and I am dying to read one of her novels. I bet they are a hoot. Arabella was someone I was less impressed with in the beginning, but as the book went on she became a much more interesting character.

The mystery wasn't too mysterious, but even so I wasn't sure who the responsible party was. I went through several suspects before the killer was finally revealed. I also loved the genre mixing. This book was a little bit paranormal, a lot mystery. I thought the book was witty as well. It is also a rather quick read, and you never get bored when reading it. Overall I thought this was a great book.

Jamieson Ridenhour is one talented author! He hooked me instantly with the charm and wittiness of this delightful murder mystery! I don't know how many times I laughed out loud with this book but I absolutely ADORED it! It's not a long novella, just 170 pages, and they fly by so quickly, when you reach the end, you'll be sad to say goodbye to Reggie, Pelham, Moony and all the other wonderful cast of characters in this 1930's murder mystery!

Reggie was an absolute JOY to get to know! I was instantly hooked by his quirky wit. The author created Reggie's dialogue to engage the reader in conversation, so to speak. Every time Reggie spoke, he drew me in a little further, until I was right there beside him, as he and his man Pelham, took off for his dear friend Moony's estate. Once there, the fun really begins!

You see, Moony has asked Reggie to help out with a young woman who has stolen his heart. Reggie truly only wants to go for the dining, but humors his friend by agreeing. After arriving at the estate, he finds himself in up to his head for so much more than he could ever expect! With twists here and laughs there, followed by a few unexpected turns, well, let's just say that poor Reggie is most definitely a character that will steal your heart with all he puts up with!

If you want a fun, fast past, historical murder mystery, then grab up a copy of Mr. Ridenhour's laugh out loud, 5 Book worthy novella. You'll take a trip into time, learn a few new witty sayings and fall in love with the characters of Barking Mad. I truly hope that Reginald Spiffington will make a return in a future murder mystery as I don't think I could ever get enough of his charming dialogue and spunk!
