I like it when people keep things simple. Learnt a lot from reading this very informative book. Without glorifying war it explains the impact the nazis had on not only everyday people but religion, economics and a lot more. Great read ( )

A very satisfying account of the rise and fall of Nazism. Thorough but pretty brief, it is illustrated with short portraits of some ordinary people caught up in the tragedy and also includes a nice selection of contemporary jokes. Most attention is given to social issues in the rise adn experience of the Third Reich, so there is little detail about the fighting. Good references and index. It starts with an account of Drexler who started the party that Hitler later took over. He is said to be nationalistic, racist, militaristic and anti-semitic. I suppose that begs the question why were the Germans so susceptible to those views. Whittock gives some explanation for that. There is very satisfying treatment of the churches reaction to Nazism and its weakness despite Bonhoeffer, and the innocent White Rose students get their honourable tribute. A great achievement in a short space and amazingly good value in Kindle. ( )
