All changed, changed utterly; A terrible beauty is born Easter 1916, W B Yeats Terrible Beauty presents a unique narrative of the twentieth century. Unlike more conventional histories, where the focus is on political events and personalities, on wars, treaties and elections, this book concentrates on the ideas that made the century so rich, rewarding and provocative. Beginning with four seminal ideas which were introduced in 1900 - the unconscious, the gene, the quantum and Picasso's first paintings in Paris - the book brings together the main areas of thought and juxtaposes the most original and influential ideas of our time in an immensely readable narrative. From the creation of plastic to Norman Mailer, from the discovery of the 'Big Bang' to the Counterculture, from Relativity to Susan Sontag, from Proust to Salman Rushdie, and Henri Bergson to Saul Bellow, the book's range is encyclopedic. We meet in these pages the other twentieth century, the writers, the artists, the scientists and philosophers who were not cowed by the political and military disasters raging around them, and produced some of the most amazing and rewarding ideas by which we live. Terrible Beauty, endlessly stimulating and provocative, affirms that there was much more to the twentieth century than war and genocide.… (mais)

Ok, obviously he can't include everything, and I felt like there was a lot missing in terms of math and statistics and science and what not. However, that may just be my bias. He also had a lot on architecture that I could care less about, but that may be because I know so little about it.

Besides that, wonderful book. A little slow at the start, but the ending flew by as I raced through the pages. Again, could be my bias. ( )

A beast of a book. I spent a month happily browsing this man's extraordinary knowledge and reading about 750 pages. In areas where I have some knowledge, he is quite good. His handle on the WWI poets and the post WWll foreign movies is excellent, He introduced me to many scientists and their effects on our lives.
He is absolutely correct in dismissing Freud and Marx. ( )

Imagine a book that gives a paragraph to every person in the 20th Century. Or at least to everyone who got his name in the news for more than a day: scientists, writers, philosophers, artists, you name it. All are here in this fatboy of a book weighing in at 800 plus pages. ( )

A marvelous intellectual history of the 20th century. Amazingly he gets it right: Marx and Freud have nothing to say to us. ( )
