"Diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease nine months earlier, Nate is about to leap off an 11th-floor ledge of a bank building in Santa Monica, Calif., when he notices a robbery in progress through the window next to where he is standing. Nate climbs back in the window undetected, grabs a handgun a masked man has conveniently set down, and, thanks to his ROTC firearms training, succeeds in shooting dead five of the six robbers. In revenge, the thwarted theft's mastermind, a notorious Ukrainian mobster, vows to brutally kill Nate and his teenage daughter unless Nate can retrieve the robbery's objective: an envelope stored in one of the bank's safe deposit boxes."--Provided by publisher.… (mais)

Ex-soldier Nate Overbay, suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrog's disease), is about to kill himself by jumping from an eleventh-floor ledge, when he decides to intervene in a bank robbery, killing all but one of the crew. Unfortunately, the crew was there to recover something valuable from a safety deposit box, and the Ukranian mobster, Pavlo threatens to kill Nate's teenage daughter Cielle slowly unless he recovers the item. Miraculously, Nate manages to avoid the FBI and get the better of the mobster, and his psychotic group of bodyguards and killers. Hurwitz should go back to writing his Tim Rackley novels. ( )

Excellent 'heart in throat' action book. I couldn't put it down. ( )

Nate Overbay, ready to end his cannot-be-won battle with ALS, prepares to jump from the eleventh-story ledge of the First Union Bank of Southern California. But gunshots from inside the bank derail his plan; Nate steps through a window into the carnage and ends up the hero of the day.

But the mastermind of the heist, thwarted in his efforts to retrieve a vital item, presents Nate with an execrable ultimatum. Nate will get the item Ukrainian mobster Pavlo Shevchenko wants or his estranged wife, Janie, and teenaged daughter, Cielle, will suffer slow, harrowing deaths. Can Nate deal with his PTSD, the relentless advancement of his ALS symptoms, and his need to secure this item at all costs, before his time runs out?

Nate’s struggles with himself, with the disease, and with the steps he must take to protect those he loves more than life itself combine to create a compulsive, gritty, violent, propulsive tale. The unfolding narrative exposes layer after layer of unexpected twists in a tale of moral dilemma, agonizing adversity, and hard-won triumph. Well-drawn characters and non-stop action make this book one readers are sure to find unputdownable. Don’t miss it.

Highly recommended. ( )

This is my first book by this author. I love Thrillers and this one has lots of stars. The author can definitely write good action stories.

I just didn't like a lot of the story choices. Let me list the ways:

1. Our hero was once a promising you man with great future ahead. Now he is a depressed loser who disappoints everyone and has got a medical problem. He also makes some dumb choices during the story.

2. The plot is just a little stupid and the bad guys are cartoons.

Other then that it's OK.

There are other thriller writers I like better:
Les Standiford, John D. MacDonald, Randy Wayne White, Vince Flynn, Daniel Silva, Nelson DeMille, Lee Child, Frederick Forsyth, Ken Follett, C. J. Box,Tom Clancy... ( )

As I was reading Survivor, I decided that the writer had written this book with a movie in mind. It's that kind of non stop action story with a sympathetic hero (PTSD AND ALS)dead best friend who appears as a ghost Rescue Me style from time to time and a Ukranian mob villian who's the baddest badass, except when it comes to his 17 year old daughter.

I call this an airplane book. It's very entertaining but when the story is over, its not one you are going to spend any time afterwards thinking about. Best to leave it in the pocket for the next passenger to read to kill a few hours.

Turns out that Gregg Hurwitz has written for television, the movies and comics. That probably explains his style. In fact, when I read his biography I was reminded of Robert Crais. Turns out Crais has done an interview with Gregg Hurwitz.

While the characters behave fairly predictably, and the story is a wee bit formulaic, The Survivor is entertaining and a fun and thrilling read. In the end, sometimes that's just what you're looking for. ( )
