Watch in amazement as a varied selection of people from different countries, cultures and times merge together to form the Christian church. Learn from their mistakes and errors but more importantly learn from their amazing strengths and gifts. Marvel at the incredible things accomplished by God in such a short space of time. Written in a modern and relaxed style this is a book that will introduce you to history without the tears and with all the wonder. There are longer chapters interspersed with short factual chapters. Extra features throughout this book look deeper into issues such as persecution; worship; creeds and councils and the formation of the Bible as well as a timeline. Wow - what an EXCELLENT book. Chronicles is a great title - short stories profiling many of the early Christians. Also provides explanations of terms and traditions which is interesting. Can't believe that I waited two years to read this to my homeschool Jr & Sr High kids for our Ancient History studies. Treat yourself to this page-turner. It is historical fiction, based on many original sources. ( )

This excellent church history book for ages 9-14 is a gem! It discusses the most important church fathers, including the Great Cappadocians, Polycarp, Cyprian, and quite a few others, from Paul to Benedict. It's very readable, but I wish the authors would note that the dialogue is mostly invented and some suggested resources if kids want to keep reading about the early church. There is a bibliography at the back, though.
I recommend this book highly to everyone who is interested in how the church developed in its first 500 years. ( )
