Turning Pro is the follow up work to Steven Pressfield's classic, The War of Art. What we get when we turn pro is we find our power. We find our will and our voice and we find our self-respect. We become who we always were but had, until then, been afraid to embrace and to live out.

Quick read. Some inspiring stuff that hit home. didn't offer much more though than this post which sums it up http://the99percent.com/articles/7192/Are-You-Trapped-in-a-Shadow-Career-The-Art... ( )

There is some very good content in this book -- but I resented paying $10 for far less than an actual 148 pages worth of content.

This reads like a long address to a class of creative graduates. It's wise. It's insightful. It holds up a mirror to some of the most self-destructive forces that impede development as mature creatives.

But it is not a full book. ( )

The War of Art is about what is keeping us from fulfilling our life's calling; whether that's creating a work of art, starting a new enterprise, embarking on a life of service to others, or even undertaking a course of self-improvement. Turning Pro is how we beat that opponent. If you want to make something of your life I highly recommend this book. ( )

I respect Pressfield's openness in sharing the struggles of his own journey from amateur to pro. It's easy to look at Bagger Vance or Gates of Fire and assume they were easily borne of a gifted writer; he certainly is, but it wasn't without struggle. His text is a simple how-to with regard to helping the reader gain focus, but I think you have to have a good idea of what you were born to do before you overcome the resistance (described in the War of Art) and made the decision to devote your days to it (as encouraged by Turning Pro.)

For that reason, it's not one I would recommend to a twenty-something or as a graduation gift. Self-help books don't necessarily need to be written by therapists or psychology professionals, but I think the audience for this book needs to have "misspent" at least a decade of their life to put his text in the proper context. You really need to figure out what calling it is you may be avoiding before reading this one. ( )

Ugh. I don't normally read these kinds of books but after the third recommendation I decided to give this one a chance. It wasn't written for me.

I have little patience for pop psychology and even less for self-aggrandizement. This book has both, exclusively. Don't quote your own work. Say something new or quote someone else and say something new about the quote. The ideas in this book couldn't fill a leaflet and the ones that are here are completely undeveloped.

If you like watching infomercials or buying CutCo knives, or reading Robert Kiyosaki, you're going to love this book. Otherwise, look elsewhere. ( )
