I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review. Ember has a secret, she can see your death by just touching you. Growing up has been difficult enough with this curse, but then her father disappears. Because she knew and alerted the police she becomes their one and only suspect. Three years later, similar disappearances occur and once again she's suspect. When Ember finds out the truth, she is shocked. This was a great, quick read, with Angels of Death, Grim Reapers, and Grim Angels. I loved every moment of this novel filled with unconventional twists. ( )

Even with this being such a dark story, I really liked it a lot. Ember is surrounded by death. There is too much and not enough happening in Ember's life, especially normal teenage things. Ember cannot touch anyone without seeing a death omen, how the person dies. That means not dating and not getting close to anyone, it's hard enough with her best friend Raven. Ember was overjoyed when Asher enters her life and she was able to touch him without seeing a death omen. No one wants to be Ember's friend and no boys ever looked her way and all of a sudden comes Asher and Cameron noticing her and not caring that everyone thinks she's weird and the rumors about her. And then she finds out there's more to her ability or curse as she refers to it, as if things weren't bad enough in her life.

This book was filled with a lot of death and dying. It definitely has a more mature young adult theme. Ember lives a difficult life in her town, most of the people don't like her or are afraid of her and even the cops keep a eye on her since she crossed paths with them at a very early age. But through all this Ember remains stoic and strong. Ember can surely take care of herself but living a lonely existence is still difficult and dealing with her best friend's sometimes double personality.

It was really interesting to follow Ember's story and how the author shows her inner turmoil of how she dealt with the difficulties in her life. This was a well written book and I enjoyed it immensely. ( )

Jessica Sorensen never disappoints with a book! I know as soon as I pick it up I am going to love it!
Ember X was no exception! I had to finish this one before I could go to bed! I was up until 1 a.m. !

Ember isn't your typical girl, she avoids touching anyone if she can. Because when she does she is instantly hit with how the person will die. The only way she can escape it is to avoid contact.

But then she meets Asher, and when he finally does touch her, all she feels is calm. No death omen flashing in her head. She is instantly drawn to him. Needing the physical contact she has shied away from.
Of course things aren't going to be easy; people start dying in her town. With the police questioning her. Throw in another hot new guy who also stops the death omens with his touch. A semi insane best friend and for real crazy family.

This is a must read! I like Ms. Sorensen's twist on paranormal subjects! I am looking forward to reading the next book.
The only disappointment I feel when reading one of Jessica Sorensen's books is knowing that I will have to wait forever for the follow-up! But they are worth it! ( )

Ember is living a nightmare. Her home life is awful, but this isn’t all she has to deal with. Ember can sense when a person is going to die and how. She lives everyday not being able to touch anyone, for fear she sees them die. It has to be a lonely life for Ember. I always like when the main character is just a typical young girl who has no clue the beauty she holds and the affect she has on others, and the gift that believes is a curse is anything but. Ember is this girl. She is just an all around good girl and I adored her, and her best friend, who was a little on the wild side.

The two guys, Cameron and Asher, were both so mysterious. There were times when I was questioning which was the good one and which one was the evil one. I think the fact that it wasn’t revealed who was who until the near the end was great. Ember is somewhat torn between the two, and I wouldn’t call it a love triangle, but maybe a lust-triangle. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why, they are gorgeous and mysterious, what’s not to like, so it was easy to see why she is so confused. I think I was just as torn when it came to these two also.

The plot is moves a fairly fast pace, and it kept my interest from the beginning. The battle between the Angels, who weren’t just Angels, but Angels of Death and the Reapers. Ember seeing death omens opens her world to something she never dreamed of and puts her in danger, with those who want to stop her or claim her for their side, so there was really a dull moment. Yes, there some teenage drama that came along with the story, but it never really interfered with the main story. There is so much to the story, but it is hard to not give too much away. And all the events leading up the big battle at the end, it was intense and I was still not sure what I wanted Ember to do, but it was still fantastic. I was satisfied with the way it ended, but it had a cliffhanger feel to it. Questions still remain and what is in store for Ember is still a mystery.

All in all, this has some amazing characters, and interesting plot and I am always a sucker for Reapers, so I enjoyed this a lot. This to me was a strong start to the series, and I am looking forward to reading Cinder, the second book later this year.

Ember X is a new adult version of young adult paranormal novel Ember by Jessica Sorensen. Ember, our narrator, has an unorthodox ability. Whenever she touches or is touched someone, Ember has a death omen: premonition how and when that person is going to die. Tortured by these painful and horrific visions (since in her town obviously no one never dies peacefully or from old age) Ember shuns away from human contact. With dead father, alcoholic mother and crazy-artistic brother, Ember's only confidant is her best friend who is outgoing, slutty, questionably loyal and party-loving'.

To make it a little bit more cliche (like this was not enough) enters a romance part of a story. Of course it's a love triangle and it has something for everyone's taste: one blond and one dark hot guy both new to town and both attracted to our heroine. There will be a lot of smoldering glances and Ember's insides will be 'curving and cultivating with so much sweltering heat'. I personally could not feel any heat, but maybe it's better, that thing that happens to her insides does not sound comfortable. But Ember obviously liked it, because she sometimes nearly has an orgasm just from heated glares exchange.

Ember was tough heroine to relate to. She was usually mopping around either because of her love dilemma, family problems or because she can not deal with her ability. With constant complains and dramatic self-pity through the whole book, Ember sounded more like a teenager/young adult then like a grown up. Although adding more sexual content pushed Ember X into new adult genre, the psychology of characters needed more change and work too, because some behaviour that can be tolerated for ya book feels out of place and immature in novel targeted for older audience.

The one part of Ember X I liked was the (surprise surprise) paranormal part. The lore about angels and grim reapers that Jessica Sorensen made up was interesting and we got introduced to the whole history gradually. Ember X is easy to read because proverbial carrot on a stick, aka new info about something, is always dangling just a little bit out of reach, so you trod along hoping to catch it and finally figure out what is really happening. As always, since this is a series, a some things are left unanswered for the sequel but I think we had good back story for the start.

Although I liked the paranormal elements of the story, the characters were too immature and dramatic, so I doubt that I will be continuing Death Collectors series. Fans of ya paranormal books who want to increase the heat to new adult level and who like angels, love triangles and tortured heroines will probably like Ember X by Jessica Sorensen but I recommend that you check an excerpt either via Amazon or some other website before buying. Or grab a Kindle ebook while it is still free. ;) ( )
