Book 1 of the In Your Dreams series. Sixteen-year-old Zara "Zip" McKee lives for three things: basketball, books, and bailing out of tiny Titusville, Illinois, where the junior high and high school are in the same building and everyone's known everyone else since birth. But when Kieran Lanier moves to town and passes out on her desk on his first day at school, Zip's life gets complicated in a way she never dreamed. Kieran has narcolepsy, and although he sometimes struggles to stay awake, he has no trouble capturing Zip's heart and trusting her with his most guarded secret--he sees bits and pieces of the future in his dreams. But just when Zip thinks that maybe she can handle having a boyfriend who sees things before they happen, her budding relationship with Kieran gets a jolt when Kieran's parents reveal that his sleeping disorder is not what it seems and may be putting them in harm's way. And when Zip begins to have unsettling dreams, she must decide if she can live with knowing the future in advance when she's afraid of what might happen. *Recommended for Young Adult readers 13 and up (mild cursing, some adult situations)… (mais)

A copy of this book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I found this book really unique to read. The concept of a character having a something about them that they like/hate at the same time isn't new, but the way it was in this particular book was great. The book’s main character is Zip. She lives with her mom, her grandparents live next door, and her dad lives in Chicago. Her parents are divorced which obviously isn’t so abnormal nowadays. Her dad gave her the nickname ‘Zip’ years ago because she’s a fast runner. She plays basketball, loves to read, and what do you know, has new neighbors moving in next door.

Kieran and Kayla are the new kids to town. He has a sleeping disorder. He can't control when he sleeps and sometimes passes out at inconvenient times, such as during school. He also has dreams of the future that always come true. They are only small scenes that don't normally make sense until the event actually happens, but they're always accurate. This happens to him because his mother was taking a new drug while pregnant. Interesting stuff happened back in the day (no spoilers) and now the only person who might know the formula is his biological father. Their hope is that if the formula was revealed a cure could be developed to help Kieran. But does Kieran want to change? Obviously he wants to be in control of when he sleeps, but having those dreams is part of who he is. It's what he's grown up doing. Could he really give that up to be like a normal guy?

Zip just happens to be there when Kieran has his first episode in school and they end up becoming close friends, much to his sister Kayla’s dislike. The formation of their relationship was super cute
The main problem of the book was that Kieran's real dad is getting released from jail and might come to manipulate Kieran. His buddy Frank is already in this town and Zip thinks she might be getting the dreams too. Everything goes down on the most important night of the year: Prom. There were engaging twists and turns throughout. This book actually made me not want to read it. The file sat on my phone for like a week because I didn't want to find out what happened on Prom night. I didn't want to hear about anything bad happening. My curiosity won out. I'm glad it did because it was nowhere near as bad as I thought haha. The book was good, obviously, but it doesn't leave me dying to read book two. The book doesn't end in a cliffhanger and I honestly think it could have been a stand alone book. I have no clue what book two will be about, but I most certainly will read it, it's just not going to kill me to put it off a bit.

Typically I put constructive criticism in my reviews but there wasn't really anything that stood out to me. Which can be taken as a compliment and a criticism. I liked this book but there wasn't really anything about it to make it stand out from other books, aside from the fact that Kieran's condition came from his mom taking drugs during pregnancy. What I mean is, in the future I probably won't remember this book, it doesn't have that 'omg' quality that makes a book unforgettable. I’d recommend it if you want a short refreshing read, but I don’t think that the book is something that will stick with you. ( )

this was a fairly decent book, the first in a series of 4. I got it for free along with the second boom from librarything in order to review.

Zip is the main character, a teenaged girl on her high schools basketball team. She lives in a small town where everyone literally knows everyone so when 2 new students come to town, they are the subject of much whispering.

Kieran and his sister Kayla are in Zips first class and that's pretty much when Zips life changes. Kieran falls asleep on her and he literally can't wake up. Turns out he has narcolepsy which turns him into the hot story at school.

He also has dreams, flashes of images that sometimes come true.

There are several twists and turns as Zip and Kieran sloy grow closer and as long held family secrets come to light.

The book had a good pace and an interesting plot. I thought it was going to be a bit more supernatural in how Kieran got his abilities but the real reason is just as good. I wish we could do half stars on goodreads because I'd lean more towards 3 1/2 stars for this work. It had it's predictable moments, your standard fare of how you g adult teen romances go but it was good. Looking forward to reading more in the series. ( )

Zara "Zip" McKee lives in a small town called Titusville where everybody knows everybody since birth and thensome. So Zip learns most exciting news in awhile two new students Kayla and Kieran Lanier. Kieran makes his grand entrance into school life by falling asleep in class which freaks Zip out badly. Zip fears are put to rest when Kieran explains that he has narcolepsy. Kieran and Zip become fast friends that develop slowly into a relationship. Kieran shares a secret with Zip what he dreams come true. At first Zip is skeptical but comes to see that Kieran is telling the truth. When Kieran's past collides with his future he becomes upset and withdrawn from his family. What to Kieran's dream tell him? Your answers await you in In Your Dreams.

I'm kinda speechless because I've often that dreams tell alot about a person and their surroundings. I found the story to be fascinating, intriguing, and compelling. The story drew me in from first word to last word. The characters are real, down to earth, interesting, and full of mystery. I look forward to reading more from this author. ( )

A nice YA story of a normal small town girl who encounters Kieran her new neighbor and high school classmate who has a sleep disorder with special 'perks'. This tale goes into their relationship, his disorder along with a paranormal twist. Recommend for YA readers, especially those that like a good girl who kicks butt.

I'm acquainted with narcolepsy and I'm glad to see some of the symptoms being explained to a younger audience but I wish for two things. One, that the symptoms Kieran displayed were named (cataplexy) just because no one ever talks about it and, two, that Kieran's symptom onset was more 'normal' to help kids recognize the signs of a sleep disorder.

That being said, I liked the characters, especially Zip - she's a bit of a goody two-shoes in that she doesn't rebel like many teens but she's focused on basketball and strives for good grades so being the nice girl works for her. She doesn't have special powers or magical abilities - she's just a normal girl in small town America that a lot of readers can relate to.

The writing itself is good, but the plot drags a bit and would benefit from more conflict to keep up the pace. Ms. Martin spends a lot of time setting up characters and background so I expect her to do something with all of this building when future installments are released.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review. ( )
