In this installment of the Warlock of Gramarye, our intrepid hero must thwart an attempt by the Abbott of the Order of St. Vidicon on Gramarye from splitting with the Catholic Church in Rome and converting the monarchy to a theocracy. In addition to this minor matter, he has to combat his own hostility to organized religion, his wife's blind obedience to it, and his son's apparent interest in joining up as a monk.

All that sounded good, but I wasn't terribly impressed with this volume. The obvious religious problems were going to arise and Rod was obviously going to be facing off against the religious right. In previous books, I've enjoyed some the commentary on organized religion, but I think dedicating an entire book to the subject is a little overboard.

The banter wasn't really there this time either. The closest we get is when Rod debates the benefits of organized religion with the head of the Order of St. Vidicon from Earth. And those discussions are far more heated and serious than entertaining.
