I really wanted to like this book. I saw glimmers of good story-telling. In my opinion, character development was decent. The big-story picture showed promise. The story was in no way formulaic; a weakness often found in modern novel-writing. Narration, inner dialogue and plot balanced well along w/ reasonable pacing at times but then fell so far off the mark as to be annoying. I understand about character arcs, so I waited... and waited for Joclyn to show any sign of strength; but, alas, she did not. If I were only to compare this book to other self-published books I'd have given it a four, as the list of really bad indie books crowd the market. But I have to ask myself this: what does it mean when I, as the reader, wished for Jocylyn to die at the hands of Ryland? I had just gotten too tired of her whining, her complaining, her weaknesses, and failures, which seemed to grow by the page. I understand this is book 1 in a series, but it's as though 1/3 of the story screamed: finish me! Sadly, my hope for this series died with the first book. But kudos to the author for holding story elements together w/ decent editing, glimmers of finesse, and good overall story-telling. ( )

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! Very good start to a nice, long series. If you have a lazy afternoon and need a escape book, look no further! ( )

So many questions that are needed to be answered!

*Why is Edmund killing the Chosen Children aside from the wish to be supreme?
*Why is Joclyn so special?
*Where is her father? Why did he spell her name as Jocelyn? Was it an honest mistake or deliberate?
*What is the mythology behind the Chosen Children, the Skritek and that other word used to call Wyn's race that I can't spell nor pronounced?
*Is this a love triangle? Please say it ain't so. Ryland is sweet and a boyfriend you can bring home to your parents. But there is Ilyan who's...
*What happens now that they failed?

Tune in as I read the rest of the series this week before I post a review. ( )

Well written, great paced book with an interesting introduction to this new magical realm. Not too much is divulged about the Magic aspect in this first book, so its more about love and self-discovery, but after reading the next book's synopsis it seems that should be rectified. This is not a story with deep meaningful overtures but it is definitely a very enjoyable read. ( )
