Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive--and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills--and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit--he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?… (mais)

I'm not a scientific kind of person so I wasn't sure how much I would like this book. It turns out that this is the best book I have read in a very long time. ( )

This is the 1st adult sci-fi book I have read. I don't know if any others can live up to this one.

This is in my top 5 favorite books now. Its that great. You would think that a book about a lonely man on mars for 1 1/2 yrs would not be a great read, but it was. the main character is funny. he needs that sense of humor to get through and the book needed it too. I regularly laughed out loud.

Mark Watney is one of my favorite characters of all time! I'm very impressed with the author even tho this is his first book.

I highly recommend all my friends read this book!

It's the little details that make this, Andy Weir has a great set of friends, figuring out what happens to processed meat under acceleration sounds like a wonderful thing to do over beers. It really is as good as the tens of thousands of reviews make it seem. ( )

I liked it, but in the back of my mind I was wondering what may have been the most realistic and which were for the plot. In fact, I saw the movie before reading the book, and the movie seemed much more unrealistic than the book. Maybe because of all the math involved in the book that movie skipped :-) ( )

This is a really entertaining and immersive book. The term science fiction does not really begin to describe this one, it is SCIENCE fiction. Emphasis on the SCIENCE if you can't tell. I loved the voice of the wonderfully named main character (Mark Watney) and the wonderful way he is put through a realistic portrayal of an amazing situation. I enjoyed this a lot. ( )

The Martian is technically a “hard science fiction” book – a subgenre of science fiction so firmly rooted in science that the story wouldn’t work without it. And certainly, Weir’s first work is science-heavy; he even mentioned in an interview that the book was an exercise in whether he could make a fictional narrative out of the scientific premise of the novel. The answer, obviously, is “yes,” and The Martian is an intriguing exercise in the way that science itself can create plot.

Also, I have duct tape. Ordinary duct tape, like you buy at a hardware store. Turns out even NASA can't improve on duct tape.
I need to ask myself, "What would an Apollo astronaut do?" He'd drink three whiskey sours, drive his Corvette to the launchpad, then fly to the moon in a command module smaller than my Rover. Man, those guys were cool.
Yes, of course duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped.
As with most of life's problems, this one can be solved by a box of pure radiation.
Hurray for standardized valve systems!
