This was a really exciting read. It felt very distinct and I love how strong and intelligent Captain Marvel is! Captain Marvel is a bad ass!

This volume, thanks to Kelly Sue DeConnick, has lots of heart...tons of heart in fact but it was done in a refreshing manner. It's not filled with corny romance. It's all about pursuing your dreams! There's plenty of action and humor, but what really comes to the surface is the desire to better one's self and to care for others. Carol Danvers comes across as a genuine character, not just a heavy-hitting former leader of the Avengers (although she's that, too). The script balances Danvers fighting a supervillian, talking with a sick friend and self-reflecting while floating in space. It all works and it creates a complete vision of a woman who is deciding to take the next step in her life. Captain America tells her, “Quit being an adjunct... Take the mantle.” It's a credit to DeConnick's writing skills that when Danvers finally says she's “taking the damn name,” you feel the emotion.

This is well-worth your time.

Plus, Captain Marvel's powers are amazing! She can fly in space! ( )

Growing up Ms. Marvel and Carol Danvers were the first comic that I bought that starred a woman and I loved it. She has been one of my favorite ever since. I loved the story but I have to be honest the art was hit and miss for me. The covers were fantastic but there were times in the story that I found the art distracting. This is the only thing keeping it from a 5 star., ( )

I was hoping this would be a good place to get familiar with this character in advance of the new movie. I was not disappointed. It's a pretty decent introduction to Captain Marvel, using time-travel to touch several the important events and characters in Carol Danvers' life. It also has an awesomely detailed biography in the back that runs several pages and attempts to lend some cohesion to the many stories that have been told using the character. It will be fun to see how much of this gets distilled into the Captain Marvel film and the subsequent follow-up to The Avengers Infinity War. ( )

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS AMAZING AND I WANT IT ALL IN MY LIFE ALWAYS.

But seriously, the first issue of this run is possibly one of the best issues I have ever read in any comic, ever. It's tight, it's funny, it establishes the character for new readers without boring established readers with exposition. It was just so well done. If I didn't already love DeConnick's writing, this would have sold me on her so hard.

Do yourself a favour and pick this up. ( )

Why is this only two stars? I knew nothing of the Marvel universe but felt compelled to check out Ms Marvel. Having run out of those to read I thought, what the hell, get to know Kamala's hero. So I went with this origin story. And I was completely underwhelmed. The artwork wasn't all that great and the story was ok but I didn't find it compelling. I can see why people appreciate her but this didn't convince me to really follow her story. I'll stick with my girl Diana. ( )
