Its developers call it a “Web-based learning platform.” It allow teachers to create customized practice assignment for individual students — on a range of skills addressing commas, punctuation, spelling errors, apostrophes, run-on sentences, subject-verb agreement, homonyms, and much more — and to track individual student progress. On the teacher end, the site is customized to emphasize the desired skills; on the front end, students are able to input information about their personal tastes and interests that allows the system to generate sample sentences that are familiar and of interest to each student. The program relies on adaptive software, which adjusts to students’ responses while they work, making a quiz easier or harder or repeating skills. Tutorials provide stuck students with instruction. The tracking features not only give teachers data for grades; more importantly, the data can be used as formative assessments. The Web site was developed by a teacher and is used in his classroom. Interestingly, he doesn’t have computers in his classroom, but he makes a weekly visit with his classes to the school’s computer lab, providing evidence that this learning program can be used even in low-tech schools.
