Simon is your typical geeky guy. He's had a crush on the popular girl, Cassie, all throughout high school. It's the end of the year and the whole book takes place the night of the big party at Cassie's house, what happens during that evening, and two different ways it could happen. Simon is a pretty good guy. I wasn't crazy about him, but I didn't dislike him either. He is just obsessed with what he thinks he wants and can't have, convinced that he is in love with Cassie, she's the one, etc. He spends the entire evening with the help of his friends, trying to get close to her and kiss her. There were several other characters that I did like, Ben and Coop, who were his best friends, were also gay, and both had great personalities. Then there was Stella, the new girl that Simon meets.
FML is something that may appeal to teens. It has its humorous moments, but not a lot of depth. I didn't dislike it, It just didn't appeal to me, though the humor in this book may appeal to some. The main character wasn't bad, he just didn't draw me in, and neither did the story. This is another one of those books that have mixed reviews, and is something that will probably appeal to some and not others, depending on personal taste. ( )
