Edgar Award finalist and international bestselling author Brian Freeman brings the long-awaited return of Lieutenant Jonathan Stride to the bitter cold of Duluth, Minnesota.

Sixteen-year-old Catalina Mateo shows up unannounced one night in Detective Jonathan Stride's home, dripping wet from a desperate plunge into the icy waters of Lake Superior. Her sodden clothes stained with blood, Cat spins a tale of a narrow escape from a shadowy pursuer.

Stride decides to trust this girl, but his judgment may be clouded by memories of Cat's mother. Ten years earlier, Cat hid under the porch of her family home while her mother was brutally butchered by her ex-con father. Stride still blames himself for not preventing the slaughter.

But is Cat telling the truth? Stride's police partner, Maggie Bei, doubts the homeless girl, who has been living rough on the streets of Duluth since her mother's death--and now sleeps with a knife hidden under her pillow.

As Stride investigates Cat's story, more violence trails in the teenager's wake--and Maggie's suspicions about her deepen. Now a single question haunts the void between them: Should Stride be afraid for--or of--this terribly damaged girl?

This thrilling story revolves around the tragic murder of a girl that has haunted Jonathan Stride for ten years. Michaela Mateo, whom Stride was in love with, was murdered by her husband, Marty, before he killed himself, leaving their daughter, Cat, as an orphan. Stride always felt he had failed Michaela, and now he finds himself able to help Cat, who a ruthless killer is hunting down. As the bodies pile up, Jonathan tries to protect Cat while juggling his relationships with Maggie and Selena. The Cold Nowhere is another engaging story in the series with a gripping and twisty plot that keeps you hooked until the end. I couldn't put this book down. ( )

Stride has a blast from the past when a 16 year old appears at his house needing his help. Cat is he daughter of a friend who was murdered 10 years ago, Cat is traumatized and may or may not have murdered someone and now someone may be after her. As Stride gets involved with the case he starts uncovering a prostitution ring involving some of the cities politicos and not all is what is seems. Meanwhile, Maggie is having a fling with a fellow officer in another town to offset her feelings for the mistakes she & Stride made in their relationship and Serena is still gone from Stride's life. Another seemingly straight forward case from the past rears it's ugly head combining with the current case and it's all hands on deck. Stride has to get to the bottom of Cat's trauma from her parent's suicide/murder to tie in with what is currently happening all while trying to reconcile with Serena. Will Maggie & Serena get over past hurts and will Stride be with his love and solve the cases? ( )

Nice blend of gritty, things that happened in the past and have started to bite the players big time, murder aplenty and interesting characters. ( )

Little petty things in this book just got on my nerves, even Maggie got on my nerves a bit. By the end, I was ready for it to end, I was impatient with this one for some reason. ( )
