I wasn't sure what to expect from a Frank Sinatra movie (this is the first I've seen), but I'm pleasantly surprised. The 2004 remake could hardly have been more pointless. (  ) comfypants | Feb 17, 2016 | The romance between Ben and Rosie happens too quickly in the film; I presume the book is a bit less abbreviated. Style: Suspenseful and dramatic at the time (1962), the plot now looks obvious and the acting histrionic. However, the flash-backs to the brain-washing are superbly contrived, and Angela Lansbury is magnificent. NOTES: Yes, McCarthy was bone-headed and grand-standing, but there really were Communists in the government at the time - and afterwards. FWIW, if you don't have an intimate acquaintance with the layout of a particular large auditorium, there is no way you can find a path from one place to another without a map or a lot of back-tracking. Dramatic license at work. Bizarre: (Wikipedia 2011-12-09) "In 1998, software engineer C.J. Silverio noted that several long passages of the novel seemed to be borrowed, almost word for word, from Robert Graves' 1934 novel I, Claudius.  The film moves freely between realism and surrealism. Frankenheimer shows Iselin at a press conference and Senate hearing, with details lifted directly from the Army-McCarthy hearings; as Iselin waves a list of "card-carrying communists," TV sets in the foreground show the same scene being carried on the news. Yet other scenes are from Raymond's disturbed point of view, especially when his hypnotic trigger (the Queen of Diamonds) appears in a solitaire game. There's a scene where Sinatra's character holds up a deck full of queens while trying to deprogram Raymond; it's a little out of focus, and Frankenheimer confesses on the commentary track that although Sinatra supplied several other takes, they weren't as good, so he went with the flawed one, only to be praised for the unfocused shot showing Raymond's disturbed perceptions. An extravagant tale of a brainwashed Korean War vet programmed to turn assassin at the flip of a playing card, Manchurian is a high-spirited send-up of McCarthyism, Communism, and everything in between. As the unwitting candidate, Laurence Harvey puts his agonized-fink routine to good use; the fellow vet on Harvey’s trail is Frank Sinatra, who infamously kept the film off screens for almost twenty-five years (he relented in 1987). But the legendary performance here is Angela Lansbury’s ruthless turn as the antihero’s wicked mom; she’s enough to make you wonder if this was Barbara Bush’s favorite movie.  “The Manchurian Candidate,” despite Frankenheimer’s uneven, often barely adequate, staging, is still vivid because of the script. It took off from a political double entendre that everybody had been thinking of (“Why, if Joe McCarthy were working for the Communists, he couldn’t be doing them more good!”) and carried it to startling absurdity, and the extravagances and conceits and conversational non sequiturs (by George Axelrod out of Richard Condon) were ambivalent and funny in a way that was trashy yet liberating.
