Cowboy Boyd and Mighty Calliope was a cute fantasy book. It helps children understand there are different ways to do things. nothing has to be done in a cookie cutter fashion, everything can be done in a different way. It also shows children nobody is good at everything, but everyone is good at something. I also feel that it shows children to have self confidence. Calliope and Boyd never lost faith in themselves. I enjoyed reading this book because it reminded me it is okay to be different. I think everyone needs to be reminded that they are worth something.
Classroom Extension 1: I would make a craft with the students. I would have the students trace their hand on a piece of paper. After completing the task, I would then ask them to draw or write what makes them special and important. After completing the task and decorating their hand however they choose, I would hang them on the wall in the classroom so that students could look at their hand at anytime. When the students were having a hard day or needed to remember why they are special, they could look at their hand.
Classroom Extension 2: I would have the students journal about a time they saved the day. The story could be a real life event or a made up story.
Classroom Extension 3: I would have the students paint or draw their ranch partner. I would leave the options wide open. The students would be allowed to create a real animal or make up something new. After creating their ranch partner, the students would be asked to share with the class about their animal and why they picked or created the one they did. ( )
