Can you commit the perfect crime? Pilgrim is the codename for a man who doesn't exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for US intelligence. Before he disappeared into anonymous retirement, he wrote the definitive book on forensic criminal investigation. But that book will come back to haunt him. It will help NYPD detective Ben Bradley track him down. And it will take him to a rundown New York hotel room where the body of a woman is found facedown in a bath of acid, her features erased, her teeth missing, her fingerprints gone. It is a textbook murder - and Pilgrim wrote the book. What begins as an unusual and challenging investigation will become a terrifying race-against-time to save America from oblivion. Pilgrim will have to make a journey from a public beheading in Mecca to a deserted ruins on the Turkish coast via a Nazi death camp in Alsace and the barren wilderness of the Hindu Kush in search of the faceless man who would commit an appalling act of mass murder in the name of his God.… (mais)

Probably top thriller for summer 2014. A poor Arab boy, born in Saudi Arabia, becomes a terrorist when the Saudi's execute his professorial father for some mild criticism of the royal family. After shooting down Hind gunships in Afghanistan, he trains to become a doctor, synthetically creates a smallpox virus, and then makes it vaccine proof. Assuming the identity of the Saracen, he is virtually impossible to find since he is operating alone. Meanwhile, we are introduced to a loner in American intelligence, Scott Murdoch (a/k/a Pilgrim), who has walked away and is living anonymously in Paris until he is located by a NYC detective to help solve the perfect murder in the aftermath of 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.in order to effect this attack. The trail leads them to Turkey, where the murder of a young billionaire is used as a cover for Pilgrim's investigation. Very well done, excellent character development, credible plot, with cataclysmic consequences for failure. Highly recommended.

I listened to the audiobook version of the book in my car, and although it was long, the pace and intensity kept me intrigued. I rarely rate books this high, and I understand that other readers do not share my opinion. However, the author's characters and how he outlined their version of events in alternating segments created tension and intrigue. Particularly toward the end of the book, I was so caught up in the fast-paced drama, that, like another reader described, I felt like I was holding my breath and was on the edge of my seat. Unlike some of the genre, the ending seemed fitting and complete. When the reader started the acknowledgements, my reaction was "that was a d--n good book.

Of course, a good narrator is essential for any audiobook. ( )

Oh boy. Such a know and can it all main character. US glorifying. Borderline racism. I can see Tom Cruise in the title role. ( )

solid thriller. good characters. A little over-written a times, and a bit longer than necessary in spots. ( )

Got to about page 90 and gave up, the plot being much too far-fetched for me and the main (eponymous "I") character grossly overwritten. I guess I might have read it on holiday with few other choices about, but I simply don't understand how this has had such rave reviews. ( )

“I Am Pilgrim” is not a film treatment bloated into book form. It’s a big, breathless tale of nonstop suspense, and it has something rarely found in big-budget movies of the same genre: the voice of a single writer instead of the patchwork nonsense created by endless collaborators and fixers.

There are places I'll remember all my life - Red Square with a hot wind howling across it, my mother's bedroom on the wrong side of Eight Mile, the endless gardens of a fancy foster home, a man waiting to kill me in a group of ruins known as the Theatre of Death.
