You Are a Badass for aspiring triathletes: a practical and inspiring guide to getting off the couch and on the trail to race your first -- or 50th -- triathlon When Meredith Atwood first shared her journey from tired, overworked wife and mom to successful triathlete, her story resonated with women everywhere, online at her SwimBikeMom blog and in the first edition of Triathlon for the Every Woman. Now with her own IRONMAN finishes, experience, and triathlon coaching expertise, Meredith is back with even more wisdom. In this fully revised edition, Atwood not only shares how she went from the couch to an IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon in just over a year, but also shares the latest expertise from coaches, nutritionists, and athletes on each component of the triathlon: swimming, biking, and running. With compact training plans, the most current nutrition advice, updated resources, and the latest information on long-distance racing, this new edition has all you need to make your triathlon goals a reality.… (mais)

This is nominally a useful resource for women who are into or getting into triathlon. I've registered for my first but haven't done it yet, and am doing preliminary research. The author goes into things that may seem TMI but I found very useful, as most books probably wouldn't bring them up.

The book really intends to reach all audiences of those in the beginning / intermediate experience levels, so you may find things that are more or less relevant depending on your previous experience with triathlon or other organized racing (running, cycling, or swimming).

This book also makes the annoying assumption that "Every Woman" = straight, married woman with children. If that does not fit your description, I suggest being ready to skim over several sections in this book.

However, the author is extremely judgmental about body size and food intake. She admits to struggling with body issues and binge eating, which I understand and can empathize with. However, the book tends to be a "you go girl" kind of motivational book, so to have so much of the book liberally salted with comments judging body size, equating weight with health, and judging the moral value of different types of food, is counter-productive and disappointing.

How is somebody supposed to take seriously the implication to "start now, regardless of your size!" with all of the moral judgement against certain types of food (notably: fast food and sweets) and being fat? I realize she's not saying "you, the reader, are fat, and that is bad" but when she implies "I, the author, am fat, and that is bad" it's hard not to take that personally. If you want other people not to judge themselves, start with yourself. ( )

A must read for any 'Baby Triathlete' regardless of her size, shape, or level of fitness. Meredith Atwood (aka: Swim. Bike. Mom.) takes the reader on both the technical journey to becoming a triathlete (with a little help from her friends) and the personal journey. ( )
