Tune In is the first volume of a highly-anticipated, groundbreaking biographical trilogy by the world's leading Beatles historian. Mark Lewisohn uses his unprecedented archival access and hundreds of new interviews to construct the full story of the lives and work of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Ten years in the making, Tune In takes the Beatles from before their childhoods through the final hour of 1962--when, with breakthrough success just days away, they stand on the cusp of a whole new kind of fame and celebrity. They've one hit record ("Love Me Do") behind them and the next ("Please Please Me") primed for release, their first album session is booked, and America is clear on the horizon. This is the lesser-known Beatles story--the pre-Fab years of Liverpool and Hamburg--and in many respects the most absorbing period of them all.--From publisher description.… (mais)

My interest in The Beatles was reignited by Craig Brown's One Two Three Four and now I'm halfway through watching the Anthology DVDs. Mark Lewisohn's tome - and this is only volume one! - lacks the pep of the first and the personal touch of the second. Lewisohn is the chief anorak of Beatles' knowledge but this is just far too in-depth. When I got into the swing of the chapters, I quickly learned what to skim (chart timelines) and later skip (George Martin - not interested, thanks - and lengthy quotes from teenage fans called Margaret and Beryl and the like).

I will admit to primarily wanting to read about Ringo, but of course - with this volume ending in 1962 - I had to suffer through Pete Best to get there (‘We never liked you all the years we’ve known you. You were never raelly [sic] one of us you know, soft head.’) It's a testament to the 'Fab Four' that I only just realised how Ringo was joining a tight trio of friends and had to earn both their trust and his place in the band in very short order. I did feel sorry for poor Stu, though. And I think I learned more about Brian Epstein from one chapter of this book than the whole of Ray Coleman's homophobic hack job of a biography! 'I was determined to go through the horror of this world. I feel deeply, for I have always felt deeply, for the persecuted, for the Jews, the coloured people, for the old, and society’s misfits. When I made money I planned to devote and give what I could to these people.'

Recommended as a reference book, but reading from cover to cover - or 1% to 60% on KIndle (the rest being notes and the index) - is only for the truly dedicated. ( )

listened to this one in the car. I know I wouldn't have been able to read it in book form and maintain enough interest to finish it. that's not saying it's not good...its just incredibly detailed - being pulled along with an audiobook was a good thing. thought it was a fantastic book and am looking forward to the second book. it's a fascinating and extremely detailed accounting of not just the band, but also the people who helped them along the way. What an absolutely stunning achievement! The penultimate for any Beatles fan. I only wish my mother had been able to read this...her excitement would have been beyond 5 stars. ( )

So, what do I get the Beatles fan who has everything? (i.e. my brother)

This massive book is a good start!

For the ultimate Beatles fanatic, this book covers the Fab four from before their childhoods to their cusp of fame in 1962.

Sections on their formative years include: Old Before Our Birth, Year 1, 1958: Thinking of Linking, Year 2, 1959: Three Cool Cats, Year 3, 1960: Competence, Confidence & Continuity, Year 4, 1961: The Rock Age, and Year 5, 1962: Always Be True.

Tune In also includes several great school shots and candid photos of the soon-to-be famous lads.

All and all, a great first volume about the band who changed the world of music forever.

I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review. ( )

The beginning of what promises to be an all-encompassing, 3-part megabiography of The Beatles.

Lewisohn, who has delved deeply in to the Beatles legend, takes on the beginning of the story up until the moment before they become stars in England. "Tune In" (presumably Part 2 will be "Turn On" and Part 3, "Drop Out") catches the boys from the beginning, when they WERE boys.

And in going back, he corrects some mistakes of past biographies (for example, it's Richie, not Ritchie).

You get the feeling that there were tiny breaks and misses throughout. If we didn't know the end of the story, you'd get the feeling that the whole Beatles enterprise was going to collapse at any moment. But that's what makes this so interesting.

Grab this one, and while waiting years for Vols 2 and 3, go back and read some of the other things Lewishon has done (although those are more glorified lists than prose). Also read some of the more microfocused Beatles books out there, such as The Day John Met Paul and With A Little Help From My Friends: The Making Of Sgt. Pepper
