Another reviewer remarked that this would be a bit more special... if [b:Wonder|11387515|Wonder (Wonder, #1)|R.J. Palacio|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1545695751l/11387515._SY75_.jpg|16319487] hadn't already been published. I would agree. There are many similarities.

There are really nice messages and wise observations. But I was a little cringed-out by the idea of all the damage done, or not un-done, by Dell. And, like Wonder, I struggled with the multiple viewpoints. The purpose of them really was only to illustrate how special the main character was(making it a bit worse than Wonder).

But it handled grief and grieving in a nice way. And it had its funny moments. ( )

Charming story that presses upon the reader that everything happens for a reason. ( )

Not exactly realistic, but fun to read view of how some young teens manage to get what they need. Willow is super-intelligent, with strong interest in medicine and plants. Mai and Quang-ha are 1st generation Vietnamese immigrants. They all find themselves seeing a fairly incompetent school psychologist. Not gonna give away the ending!
At first I thought the author needed an editor to help with all her short one-sentence paragraphs. They jerky flow bothered me. However, partway through the book I realized they didn't matter. I'm wondering if part of her target audience was youth who need encouragement to read, and the short sentences aren't as threatening to a hesitant reader.
While the book never identifies Willow as autistic, I've tagged it such because her extreme focus shows such tendency, albeit at a high intelligence level.

Willow Chance is a 12-year old girl, obsessed with plants and diagnosing medical conditions, who finds assimilating socially to be a major challenge. Her life is turned upside down when her parents are killed in a car accident, and she finds herself left in the company of two recent acquaintances: Mai and Quang-ha Nguyen, and their mother, Pattie, who owns a nail salon. Rounding out the cast of misfits is their clueless school guidance counsellor, Dell Duke and a taxi driver, Jairo Hernandez (my favorite.) Willow is devastated by her loss, and unable to speak as these strangers rally to help her recover. It's a heartwarming story, where Willow is able to help others returning in spades the help she needed herself. There are several giant-sized plotholes though: money, Dell's utter incompetence as a person and counsellor is hard to reconcile with his stunning metamorphosis, Chance, and the child welfare services process. 3.5 stars rounded up.

Willow is a special person: she is a 12-year-old genius, ( )

I'm not sure if it's just time for me to switch back to grown-up books after reading quite a few children's and/or YA books recently, or if this one was really not on par with the others, but it didn't quite work for me. Part of that stems from my irritation with the author's egregious overuse of the word "literally" throughout the book (Come on, editors! You need to catch these things!), but Counting by 7s also follows a pretty familiar formula. The ending was visible from miles away, and the effort to tie the story up at the end with the number 7 theme felt forced. Main character Willow copes with quite a significant level of challenge above the usual, and while I could see children of her age (12) being comforted by the story, I could just as easily see them finding her situation terrifying. The gardening theme is nicely executed though, and many of the characters are endearing. A mixed bag overall.
