Great vocab building picture book. If I was still teaching English, would make a great lesson on word choice, and how the best way to improve vocabulary use is to just read. ( )

I enjoyed the humor used in this story to explain an all to common childhood occupancy-- the discovery of a bad word. The illustrations were humorous as well and I could see children enjoying reading this even without an adult. It shows how endless and wonderful the possibilities are through the use of our human language. ( )

"The Very Inappropriate Word" is about a boy named Michael, who loves words. He loves to explore and collect the whatever words he can discover. One day he picks up a new word that is actually a bad word. He hears it everywhere, so of course it's stuck inside his head. Since its stuck inside his head, Michael tells people the word and eventually the whole class is saying this inappropriate word. The teacher hears about it and asks Micheal to help her with something. After school the teacher takes Micheal into the library and asks him to pick out new spelling words. Micheal found tons of new words and eventually forgot about that very inappropriate one. This would be a good lesson to use inside the classroom because it teaches that curiosity can broaden your horizon, but to be careful of what your seeking. ( )

THE VERY INAPPROPRIATE WORD is a fictional book about a young boy who is in school and collects new vocab words. However, one day on the school bus and older kid says a word that is inappropriate out loud and Michael, the little boy, collects the word and then shares it with his friends. He then has to stay after school and find new vocabulary words for the teacher. This makes him forget all about the inappropriate word. The pictures in the story take the collecting words very seriously and have the words become objects. The pictures are very elaborate and colorful. Overall I would not use this book to teach in my classroom as a whole, however I would use it to correct behavioral issues if they did come up. ( )

In this fictional picture book, Michael loved collecting words. He heard words on the radio, the television, at school, and even saw words on billboards. He collected all the words he saw and brought them home with him, he had a collection in his room full of words he took. One day, Michael encountered a really bad word. He didn't know the meaning of it. His sister and friends told Michael it was an inappropriate word and for him not to use it. He kept the word in his pocket and told his class that day. The class started to say it out loud and Michael's teacher heard. She asked him to stay after class and his friends left for the day. She asked Michael to sit in the library and find new words. He sat in the library for 2 hours, reading and discovering new words he never knew existed. That day, he went home forgetting about the inappropriate word he discovered that morning. Bad words are not good words to keep in mind. No matter how many times you hear it or who says it, instead learn new words! The illustrations are filled all over the pages. They were cartoon and fun to look at. The illustrations matched very well with the text because the text was short and very little on the page. There were a couple of pages that showed many big words that could be hard for children to pronounce. This book could be great for an English lesson! There are many words in the illustrations that the teacher can define for students. ( )
