In End of Days, James L. Swanson, the New York Times bestselling author of Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer, brings to life the minute-by-minute details of the JFK assassination--from the Kennedys' arrival in Texas through the shooting in Dealey Plaza and the shocking aftermath that continues to reverberate in our national consciousness fifty years later. The assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, has been the subject of enduring debate, speculation, and numerous conspiracy theories, but Swanson's absorbing and complete account follows the event hour-by-hour, from the moment Lee Harvey Oswald conceived of the crime three days before its execution, to his own murder two days later at a Dallas Police precinct at the hands of Jack Ruby, a two-bit nightclub owner. Based on sweeping research never before collected so powerfully in a single volume, and illustrated with photographs, End of Days distills Kennedy's assassination into a pulse-pounding thriller that is sure to become the definitive popular account of this historic crime for years to come.… (mais)

Not great. but it satisfied my urge for a simple, straightforward account of the Kennedy assassination. I am planning on ready more - and along the specialty side of things, but wanted to grind into me the the basic story and this book does that - more or less at a high school reading level. ( )

This book is about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. (Well, obviously) The book goes through the story of the assassin and his plans. It talks about how the assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, plans his every move to first assassinate General Walker. Oswald misses by just a hair. The book next talks about his wive finding out. Oswald is a wife beater, and a father to a little baby girl, he threatens to beat his wive and says its because he "has to". The next parts of the book go on the real plan to kill Kennedy and to plan his escape. Then it talks about the aftermath of the assassination.

I don't normally like non-fiction books, but this book I really did like. I loved all the details the author put into the book. I found this book very intriguing and entertaining. I loved it very much. I wound suggest this book to any reader who likes non-fiction. I also would suggest it to people who love history. I would suggest this book who need to read something for school to do an essay, because this book will make you want to read it in one day. This book can be very hard to put down.

End of Days is a good first book to read about the assassination. Other reviewers have complained about the "pedestrian style," but that never struck me; the sentences and pacing are fine and the story is well-told. (I give three stars to any book that makes me nod and say, "Pretty good.") What's missing is Swanson's take on the events: he pieces everything together, but I kept wondering what he thought about things. (This is what happens when one reads Paul Johnson at the same time.) Plus, I was surprised that Swanson had nothing to say about the many conspiracies or why there is even a conspiracy market at all. He also never tells the reader about the fate of Jack Ruby, who died in jail. There are enough good anecdotes, however, especially about Jackie. It's a good book for a train ride, but not as good as his Bloody Crimes, which seems more revelatory. ( )

With a gift for storytelling, an ability to juxtapose events in the lives of killer and victim and an eye for the revelatory detail, Swanson offers a gripping account to those unborn in 1963 or too young to remember.

In the end, Swanson sacrifices too much in the name of storytelling and the result is an oversimplified retelling.

It’s a daunting task for an author to take on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and tell us something we don’t know, much less make us see something in a way we hadn’t already over the past 50 years. Yet James Swanson accomplishes both. “End of Days” is a fresh, modern contribution to the literature about one of the most heartbreaking crimes in history.

Drawing on the decades of technological advances that have deepened the knowledge of the assassination, the author presents the stunning unfolding of the event in punchy, poignant vignettes, following one character after another to the inexorable conclusion.
