"In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy. Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable"--… (mais)

One of the better books from King in recent years, although it follows some of the same patterns as some of his others. ( )

Months ago, I got a little thrill knowing Stephen King was coming out with another book. Even after its release, I still hadn't even read the synopsis of what the story was going to be about, I just got the book and jumped into it as soon as I had a chance. It was like jumping headfirst into the shallow end of the pool, hitting your head, and surfacing all confused. I know King has done some other 'hard-boiled detective' type stories (loved THE COLORADO KID) but it generally is not the type of story I like, and not what I was expecting from King. Yes, I know. I should have read the synopsis.

That being said, I must admit at the time of my reading, that I just was not in the mood for this type of story, and because I was expecting something different, I had to put the book down after reading only about a third of it. Someday I may take it back up and try again, but for now it shall sit there until my reading interest changes (again). ( )

My theory is that this is one of the "trunk novels" Stephen King referred to in his vastly superior novel BAG OF BONES. The trunk novel is a novel that one writes and stows away (presumably in a trunk of some sort) in order to stock up a queue of publishing-contract-satisfying fodder. MR. MERCEDES is a safely constructed novel that politely obeys structure and form, but is light on anything moving or fresh. Had a first-time writer offered the story to an editor, I doubt it would make it. But the King brand is strong enough to have secured my purchase. And I plan to read REVIVAL in November, ever holding onto the hope that the old SK will shine again. ( )

The critter in this book is a sociopath. Entirely human and utterly evil. He knows it and is utterly without remorse. The ka-tet that forms to try to stop him is made up of imperfect people who are nonetheless very easy to root for.

This isn't the most complex story King has ever told. It is a good choice for people who like his way of telling a story but don't necessarly care for non-human villains. There are no vampires, aliens, spider demons or Low Men. ( )

Though widely known for horror, I’ve always said King is more than a horror novelist. In this thriller we meet Bill Hodges, a retired detective who crosses paths once more with one of his incomplete cases. I grew to like this character and have a good deal of fondness for him. Like all of King’s work, I found the storytelling comfortable and the work character driven. I did not like the tense changes, or what I felt was a rather stereotypical or ‘comic book’ bad guy, but for all I know King did his research and psychoanalysed his perp, or ‘perk’ as anyone who reads the book will come to know him. Also found a few elements (one especially) predictable, and a few details overlooked by a supposedly trained detective. But characters, even the good ones, make mistakes. I’ll move on to the second book in this ‘trilogy’ of what appears to be independent stories featuring Hodges. ( )
