From the “Bird Box” page on Amazon (my editorial comment in brackets []): “Written with the narrative tension of The Road [NOPE] and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King[NOPE], Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world[NOPE]—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman[NOPE].“
Recommendation: Nope

Wow. Craziness. And there is already a 2nd part?! I almost gave this a pass, as I just haven’t really been feeling the dystopian/sci-fi type novels. But I’m glad I ended up going for it. This was partly due to the reviews I’d read, along with how long the wait list was going to be if I had passed on it now.
The story flows nicely, flipping back-and-forth between the character’s present day and 4 years previous. There is definitely some money so that our crazy and scary if they were real, but I don’t think the story ever went too over the top. As a mother, I found Malorie’s actions real and justifiable. What a horrible situation to find yourself in, especially with 2 young children. I love how she taught the kids things that she felt they would need to know in the future, not what kids use to learn. I’m looking forward to the next book. ( )

I would have given it 3.5 if I were able. ( )

DNF - boring, one-dimensional characters, narrator stating the obvious, but worst of all the dialogue is pretty much never what an actual person would say in a given situation, ever. Even the potentially interesting premise was executed poorly, conveniently explained by various characters, yet still not making a whole lot of sense. ( )

I read this book after having seen the film, and I must confess that I liked the film a bit better--perhaps it simply visualizes Malerman's vision very successfully, and that's a tribute to his success as a writer. I will say that I suspect that if I had read the book first, before the film was even announced, I think it would have blown my mind (I mean that in the best possible way).

Brief synopsis: Civilization collapses because creatures (of some unknown sort) begin appearing and driving insane all those who see them. Most people immediately kill themselves with whatever objects are at hand. A few are driven mad, and malicious, but they don't kill themselves. A few survivors band together and have to cope with a world in which they can't see anything outside their own homes. There are two chronological narratives, in alternating chapters: (1) At the start of the civilizational collapse, Malorie is a pregnant woman who finds a small community of survivors and attempts to deal with the immediate effects of the situation. (2) Four years later, Malorie and two toddlers must navigate down a river to what she hopes is a larger community of survivors that offers more long-term viability.

The idea of the mere sight of something unknown driving one insane is powerful and engaging. This is Malerman's chief innovation (though of course the concept comes from Lovecraft and likely others). His prose is smooth and well-crafted and kept me reading--this is a book that would be really easy to finish in one or two sessions. The premise, action, and horror are wonderful. Characterization is thin; but other than Malorie (this is very much *her* story), every other character could be summed up adequately in a sentence or two.

I must spoil the ending just a bit here: Malorie does in fact successfully navigate the river to reach the new community. It turns out to be a large converted school for blind children. They have weathered the crisis and reached a new point of stability, offering essentially a utopia to Malorie and the children. OK. I really wish that this society hadn't been quite so utopian. There is a brief note that a few members of this community voluntarily blinded themselves years ago as a means of survival. What if the price of living in the community was the requirement that Malorie submit herself and the children to being blinded? Might not this have been a more horrific close to the novel?

Very good novel, highly recommended, especially for those who haven't seen the film. In fact, I think the book would work best for those who have the fewest expectations going into the experience. ( )

Malerman overreaches a bit in his debut, which could use as much attention to the cast as to the mood, but the mood is chillingly effective.
