I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

So for this book, I went with audio version. The narrator was pretty good so I have no complaints there. However, the book kinda fell flat for me and I know it's because I watched the movie first. This is why I try not to watch movies based on books until after I have read the book. But in my defense, I didn't know this was a book till after I saw the movie on Netflix.

It was a little slow, especially in the beginning. Although near the end it did get much better. I hate when books go back and forth in timelines, especially when it gives to much away and basically spoils itself. Which is the case here. Due to them going down the river alone from the very beginning you know that she's on her own and the only conclusion is that all her housemates die. I just wish books would stop doing that.

The whole premises of the book though is fascinating. It more than just another dystopian novel. It has creatures that resemble nothing I've ever seen in books before. Although I do wish that they explained the creatures better. Like what they are, what they look like, where they come from, and most of all, why the go mad looking at them. I noticed a sequel is coming though so I'm holding out hope that some if not all these questions will be answered in the next book. ( )

Ugh did it have to end?

This was my takeaway quote. "It's better to face madness with a plan than to sit still and let it take you in pieces." ( )

Good premise: something is out there that is so horrible that people who see it kill others or themselves. We don't know what it is, nor are we told. People cower in their homes, cover their windows, and wear blindfolds outside. The central character Malorie has two children, who she has trained to rely on keen hearing, and together, they set off to find a better place. Malorie also tells her backstory when the world went to hell, and she ended up pregnant and alone. She was just not likable enough for Bird Box to warrant more than 3 stars. ( )

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

This was terrifying. I listened to it in about three days--most of it on a road trip--and not only did I discover I was not allowed to listen to it at night, I maybe also shouldn't have been driving either because I missed my exit...twice. It was fantastic. Audio was amazing. If I thought harder about it, I might be able to come up with a more critical response or acknowledge plot holes, but it was far too overwhelming. Now excuse me while I read about ponies and rainbows for the next 37 years. ( )

I'm a bit conflicted about this book. There was a lot to like but some things about the author's style kept hanging me up. I can't put my finger on exactly what it was - besides the third person, present tense choice - that kept pulling me out of the story, but I was yanked out of it a lot. Oh, and the going back and forth in time. I didn't like that much either. But the intensity was very good in places and, really, that made it worthwhile.

The book is quite a bit different from the Netflix movie but I enjoyed them both. ( )

Malerman overreaches a bit in his debut, which could use as much attention to the cast as to the mood, but the mood is chillingly effective.
