Good read

I enjoyed part two of Pete andAsh’s story. It took a different turn from the first book. A bit slow in the beginning, but a lot going on in the second half. ( )

I love these men. They are flawed and beautiful and perfect for each other. Their ups and downs made me so emotional, and the way they love each other through each difficulty filled my heart near bursting. I adore and recommend this sweet, sexy and touching story of the hardships and bliss of life and love. ( )

I really, really like Pete and Ash together; they just complement each other so well, and I was sad to see the series come to a close. I can definitely see myself doing a reread in a few years, just to revisit. ;) And the rest of my (relatively short for me) review will be under spoiler tags.

I really think that the author relies too heavily on coincidences; they happened a lot in Slide, and it's just as bad in Rare. Now Ash's long lost sister, whom he "saw" (literally - he didn't approach her or anything) in Philly happens to be the SAME girl that his friend, Joe, is dating. Yeah, you know the one who lives in Seattle now? Turns out that Danni (Ash's sister) was conveniently in Philly the one week that Ash was also in Philly, and even though Ellie apparently did enough homework to find Danni in Philly (even though she doesn't even live there anymore), she never realized that Danni actually lived in Seattle? What. That strains all credibility for me, and it just got ridiculous.

But I still gave the book four stars, because I fucking loved the rest of it so much.

Joe and Charlie in the gay bar? HILARIOUS. I mean, I laughed out loud more than once just at the mental image of those two straight guys enjoying themselves so much that they did a striptease and walked through the city half naked. I really like the character of Joe (Charlie too, but we see more of Joe) - he's comfortable in his het sexuality, so comfortable that he's cool going into a gay bar and have a good time. Too bad more guys aren't like that!

And Ash and Pete's relationship is just all sorts of mffffgh so good.

It about broke my heart to see Pete get seriously injured on the job, and I was NOT expecting Tim to die, so it was a double hit. I've had first-hand experience with someone suffering a traumatic brain injury, and I thought that the author addressed the aspects of it really well - the headaches, the confusion, the weird memory gaps that don't seem to make any sense, and the complete change in personality that sometimes happens. I was so glad that Ash and Pete were able to work through it. ;)

Oh, look at me talking about these characters like they're real. They're not, but I really enjoyed experiencing their world. ( )
