Something is rotten in the state of Wisconsin. Werewolf packs are being united and absorbed into an army of super soldiers by a mysterious figure who speaks like an angel and fights like a demon. And every Knight Templar -- keepers of the magical peace between mankind and magickind -- who tries to get close to this big bad wolf winds up dead. No knight can infiltrate a group whose members can smell a human from a mile away...no knight except one. John Charming. Ex knight. Current werewolf. Hunted by the men who trained him, he now might be their only salvation. But animal instincts are rising up to claim John more powerfully than ever before, and he must decide if this new leader of wolves is a madman...or a messiah.… (mais)

This was again a very good book. Quite a different setting to start with and while initially I was not sure about the author's choices, I think they paid off well in the end.

Firstly the blurb is extremely inaccurate. Charming is certainly not sent off as a double agent against a werewolf clan - he basically stumbles into a messy situation by accident.

Secondly I found this book was very interesting in the way it tried to see how Charming would fair in a closely knit group - without spoiling anything, not very well but the plot and actions made sense.

Thirdly one of my biggest grievances was the lack of Sig, but the last part of the book really ramped things up.

Its an interesting entry in the series that kept me engaged and I picked up book 3 immediately ( )

This series is a fun take on how the supernatural might exist in our modern world unseen. It has a similar tone to Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series, yet is different enough from anything else I've read to be its own world. I'm really enjoying it so far, and look forward to more. ( )

I really like Elliott James. The snark and humor of his characters remind me a little of Jim Butcher, but are in no way a copy. His worlds are richly realized and diverse. This story is a continuation of the original. The character is from the Charming family, as in 'Prince Charming', except he's not exactly heroic. If you're looking for something a little different and you're a fan of urban fantasy, check out his books. ( )

I liked this book even better than the first one in the series but I'm not sure why. The main character is smart, funny, and very honorable. He makes a good hero. The plot was straightforward but still managed to have some twists and surprises. I also like the humor that the author gets into his character (mostly sarcasm and snarkiness. The characters are interesting, whether they're real people or legends or something else. ( )

The second book in the series, this one was a bit darker. The focus is on werewolves and the Knights, thus the reader learns more about werewolf society and Knight politics. It is narrated by John Charming and it works in this novel. It helps make the twists and turns believable.

And there were plenty of twists and turns. I didn't see them all coming, but neither did John. The ending left plenty of room for the next book.

I particularly liked the recap at the start; it was sassy and made me laugh. The line that made me snort this time was "Chai was a very literal and serious werewolf, which sort of sounds like the first sentence of a children’s story, but I can’t help that."

If you like urban fantasies, you can start here without too much trouble, but you'd be better off to start with Charming. ( )
