This was a good book to show younger students that different cultures live different lives. This young boy grew up on the sea and looks up to his father for being a seamen. ( )

A chinese boy is trying to race to the sea to meet his family. He leaves school and has to manuever through town to get to the ocean. His family live on a house boat or sampan. His father and grandfather are going to take him out to sea with them on a bigger boat.

It was neat to see the differences in the town he was in compared to a town in the USA. It seemed so crowded and they had the open markets there. It was a good look into a different culture.

I would try to find a book about china and talk to the kids about the land of china. I would want to expose them to this way of life and maybe some of their customs.
