There was nothing terribly wrong with this book, I just found it a meh read. Both Ella and Travis were likeable but full of teenage angst, which was annoying. I could understand their guilt and heartbreak but I didn't really connect with either of them.

The story flashed from the past to the present through Ella's thoughts and her and Travis' real-life conversation as they were trapped in the elevator. For a fairly short book there was a lot going on, too much for fact, and many issues were skimmed over. Dealing with love, lies, poor decisions, friendship, betrayal and healing, "Elevated" was a quick read in verse, a format I am enjoying more and more. ( )

As a work written in verse the main characters voice comes through clearly and creates a powerful impact on the reader. The incoherence of some passages seem to relate directly back to the character's own state of mind, and despite being written in verse the book is an easy read.

For YA audiences I imagine the subject matter would be familiar and inviting though I wonder if the work would be selected without recommendation by teachers or librarians. The difficulty that arises from this particular work is the time lapses make it a chore to follow certain aspects of the work throughout the whole narrative.

However, I would greatly encourage reading this book as it highlights sentiment and creates a powerful emotional appeal though ultimately nothing is resolved, and nothing feels real about the work itself. Instead, the verse format has created a dream-like format. ( )
