This is the 3rd book in the Inspector Karen Pirie series and probably my favourite so far. The plot involves the Croation War of Independence and in particular the Siege of Dubrovnik, both things I knew very little about. A skeleton is found in an old building in Edinburgh and Karen Pirie is given the case as the murder appears to have occured many years previously. As the investigation is going on, certain chapters jump back in time to fill in the backstory of the main characters much like the previous book in the series. We also learn a little more about Karen Pirie and her life away from the police force.

I really enjoyed this book and wavered between 4 and 5, but opted for 5 as I just didn't want to put it down. Recently I have been watching The Great British Menu in the evenings, and as a result, when reading the book, in my minds eye Karen Pirie looks exactly like Susan Calman. ( )

Warning: this review contains spoilers.

A body is found on the roof of a historic building in Edinburgh. It’s a skeleton, so a cold enough case for Karen Pirie of the Historic Crimes Unit to be called in. The case has its roots in the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s, which may seem like a while ago, but for many who lived through the horrors of those years, it might as well have been yesterday.

This one took me two tries to get through. The first try was in hardcover, which I think didn’t help. Sometimes a thick hardcover is intimidating, especially when it’s a mystery. I did have to work harder to sit myself down and read it, though. It could have been the challenge of reading about unfamiliar history. But I think I got more out of it now because I’ve read Sue Black’s memoir, All That Remains, and she was one of two key contributors to the Balkans storyline. This book is also the one where Phil dies, which perhaps I realized subconsciously, making me reluctant to read it :(

I did end up liking this a fair bit. As always, I enjoy Karen’s character and the relatively non-gruesome murders that she investigates. But it’s probably not one I would pick up for a re-read any time soon. ( )

A good mystery! I was pretty good at spotting the killer this time, and still it didn't take anything away from enjoying the narrative. Good job Val McDermid :) ( )

The Skeleton Road was one hell of a book. It took me three tries to get into it, but once I did, I had trouble putting it down.

A skeleton is found in a small parapet on top of an old Edinburgh building slated for demolition. The skeleton has a bullet hole in its head, and forensics determines that the murder victim has been there for seven or eight years. That is the beginning of a remarkable tale that takes in love, revenge, the horrifying genocides in the Balkans in 1991-1992, and a fascinating and beautifully painted cast of characters who feel so real that they might step off the page and into my living room.

The Skeleton road is an excellent but grim novel. I found out more about the Balkan wars than I ever wanted to, and will probably be beset by nightmares for the foreseeable future. I give fair warning that this is not a book to be read when you're feeling emotionally vulnerable or if you're squeamish about the savagery of war and the inhumanity of some military cadres. It's a hard, hard read in many ways. For a novel sold in the "crime fiction" section of the local bookstore, it raises far more questions about morality than is ordinary, and there is no happy ending, no relief from the suffering. There are answers, but they only raise more questions.

I'm impressed beyond measure at this gem of a novel and certainly will be tracking down more of the novels of Val McDermid. ( )

Geography is about power. Although often assumed to be innocent, the geography of the world is not a product of nature but a product of histories of struggle between competing authorities over the power to organise, occupy and administer space.
