If "Surprised by Joy" was C.S. Lewis's spiritual autobiography, then "The Most Reluctant Convert" is his spiritual biography. David C. Downing covers much the same ground, taking the reader through the various stages of his spiritual journey, from atheism through idealism, materialism, spiritualism, etc., to theism and then, in mid-life, to Christianity. What Downing adds is amplification gleaned from other books by Lewis, as well as from his many letters to friends during his long struggle to find something he could believe in. (

An enjoyable overview of Jack Lewis' journey to the Christian faith. By no means exhaustive, it is still a good intro to the various philosophies (materialism, spiritualism, pantheism) Lewis explored before his ultimate conviction of Jesus-as-God when he was 33 years old. An almost unprecedented scholar at Oxford, Lewis' journey to faith provided the insight and brilliance of his stunning literary career. This book begins with Lewis' childhood and ends with his conversion. Downing pulls threads of thought from many of Lewis' pre- and post- Christian books. (
