"This sumptuous book is the ideal Christmas gift for anyone interested in the medieval era. Beautifully produced, with cloth binding, ribbon bookmark, and quality paper, it is lavishly illustrated throughout with images from illuminated manuscripts and selections from a range of medieval texts. A superb entry into medieval life as it was lived day-to-day."… (mais)

What a beautiful book! Two hundred pages of gorgeous medieval illuminated manuscripts, accompanied by modern English commentary on an amazing variety of topics. The text snippets are each a page or two long, covering an eclectic mix of topics from all walks of medieval life (Norse tales of Ugly Feet, Marco Polo, the Black Death, music, poetry, art, miracles, fairs, religion, travel, prostitution, you name it...) The illustrations are equally unusual. To mention a few: "Nero watches while his mother is dissected", "The battle between the Great Khan's marshal and the King of Mien", "Solomon's Throne", "The Island of Sumatra", "The Life of St. Edmund". Full bibliographies - Text sources and Manuscript sources, plus an index of manuscripts.
