One of America's most unusual celebrities tells his own outrageous story. From dishwasher to international celebrity in one afternoon . . . Charles Ramsey gives a roller coaster account of his life before, during, and after the dramatic rescue of three kidnapped women in Cleveland . . . Global news media declared him a hero. Well-wishers mobbed him. The Internet made him a viral sensation. It couldn't have happened to a less likely guy. Now, read how it all went down. Ramsey was in the wrong place at the right time when he answered a young woman's cry for help, kicked in his neighbor's locked front door, and got her the hell out of there - leading to the astonishing rescue of three young women - Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight - who had been missing for a decade. Reporters and TV cameras flocked to a neighborhood - and a man - they otherwise would have ignored. Ramsey was ready, with plenty to say. Bro, I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man's arms . . . Dead giveaway. It was a quote that launched a thousand Internet memes . . . In this book Ramsey walks us step-by-step through the day of the rescue and talks about living right next door to Ariel Castro - outwardly charming, secretly a monster. He tells about life before the rescue - growing up a privileged black kid in a white suburb, seeking out trouble over and over, getting kicked out of school, selling drugs, going to prison, and ultimately finding work as a dishwasher and landing by chance on gritty Seymour Avenue. And he shares what it's like to become an instant celebrity, when suddenly everybody wants a piece of you. (For example, he learned the hard way that when a big TV network flies you to New York City for an interview, that doesn't mean they also bought you a ticket back home to Cleveland!) This is a wild, eye-opening tale told with a sharp sense of humor.… (mais)

This book was a LibraryThing Early Reviewers giveaway. I got half way through this book but had to abandon it because the foul language was just too much for me to bear. From what I read up until that point it was about Charles Ramsey's life before his "fame" and how his life was affected after his instant celebrity. He was brutally honest about his bad behavior growing up, and also spoke candidly about the bad choices he made as an adult. One thing I took away from this book was the media's relentless tactics and how they will stop at nothing for a good story. Charles Ramsey was shuffled around from interview to interview often without food or rest in between, all for a story. I can't say this book was for me because I could never recommend it to any of my peers, but if you don't mind a book full of the f-bomb, and about an ordinary man speaking honestly about his life, as raw as it might have been, you might like it. Wow!!! This is not a typical biography. This is a amazing story of Charles Ramsey's life. He is truthful, honest, funny, controversial, repetitive, annoying and a great story teller. Kudos to co author Randy Nyerges for bringing his story to paper. ( )

I received Dead Giveaway: The Rescue, Hamburgers, White Folks, and Instant Celebrity…by Charles Ramsey, Randy Nyerges as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. I enjoyed reading this book. Mr. Ramsey did not pull any punches about his checkered past, his beliefs, his dysfunctional family situation, domestic violence or his own prejudices. I appreciate that he chose to get involved in a situation which could have proved to be very dangerous, had Ariel Castro shown up when Ramsey was helping the captive girls escape. Many would have chosen not to be involved. ( )

What can be said? It is what it is. This book is exactly what you expect it to be. He is crude, he is outrageous, he is also very funny and knows exactly who he is. Who wouldn't grab their five minutes of fame when they can? Not super enlightening, but very entertaining. ( )

This book had such potential but I believe Ramsey probably railroaded the co-author judging by the personality he portrayed in his memoir. I would love professional input on his motivation and his life. I felt the way the book was written, though completely honest, was not inspiring for anyone for anything. It would have been good to have interviews with family and friends of Ramsey's. Would not recommend this for anyone. I am sure a more professional account is in the making. ( )
