"From V.E. Schwab, the critically acclaimed author of Vicious, comes a new universe of daring adventure, thrilling power, and parallel Londons, beginning with A Darker Shade of Magic. Kell is one of the last Travelers--magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes--as such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne--a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now. Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see--a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure. But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive--and that is proving trickier than they hoped. "--… (mais)

The core worldbuilding conceit of the book is that of four parallel worlds, specifically four Londons. Gray London (our London?), a dull world with little to no magic left; Red London, with magic full of life; White London, with a more sharp and controlling feel; and lost Black London. The feel and description of each London really makes the book, with Schwab evoking each London with colors and scents and even feelings. It's a really interesting take and done rather well.

And while the magic of each world has its own distinct feel, they're fascinating to read. In particular, there are a few artifacts, which Schwab has quite a way of describing.

Kell wore a very peculiar coat. It had neither one side, which would be conventional, nor two, which would be unexpected, but several, which was, of course, impossible. The first thing he did whenever he stepped out of one London and into another was take off the coat and turn it inside out once or twice (or even three times) until he found the side he needed. Not all of them were fashionable, but they each served a purpose. There were ones that blended in and ones that stood out, and one that served no purpose but of which he was just particularly fond.

Speaking of Kell, the main characters are quite a draw as well. Kell, is a Red Londer is one of only two (known) people born with a natural ability to travel between worlds. Since the doors were closed ever since Black London fell, his abilities are even more unique. So of course what does he use them for? Smuggling. And carrying messages between the Royalty of each London, but we all know his real goals. I can see a lot of myself in Kell, which is always a good reason to read a book.

Then they is Lila. Oh Lila.

I'd rather die on an adventure than live standing still.

She certainly is rather quoteable.

“Sure I do,” countered Lila cheerfully. “There’s Dull London, Kell London, Creepy London, and Dead London,” she recited, ticking them off on her fingers. “See? I’m a fast learner.”

She's a thief from Gray London and there are hints of quite a bit more, although I expect it will take until [b:A Gathering of Shadows|20764879|A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic, #2)|V.E. “Delilah Bard,” she said. “We’ve met before. And you looked worse.”

Rhy laughed silently. “I apologize for anything I might have done. I was not myself.”

“I apologize for shooting you in the leg,” said Lila. “I was myself entirely.”
Rhy broke into his perfect smile. “I like this one,” he said to Kell. “Can I borrow her?”

“You can try,” said Lila, raising a brow. “But you’ll be a prince without his fingers.”

Wonderful.

Overall, it's a crazy book that could stand alone, but works even better making me want to read the sequels. Fun worldbuilding and great characters. Well worth the read.

Onwards! ( )

Fast and clever and fun; not too dense but not fluff either. Heavy on the elemental magic and pride as weakness. Great heroine and hero/heroine interactions. Well developed characters/relationships. Very enjoyable and looking forward to the next. ( )

I really wish Goodreads had half stars, but I suppose that is a slippery slope. At any rate, this book is somewhat better than a three star book, but not as good as most four stars. A couple of things:

First, I was really hopeful with this fantasy. It has a great premise (multiple Londons, so a bit of parallel universe SF with ma fantasy) and looked to be more akin to Grossman's magic novels than the drivel that passes for fantasy these days. Then, I passed the half-way point and the "conflict" was introduced.

At about 60% through, I started to see all the familiar fantasy tropes, but not a one of them done in an interesting way. Even the parallel universes stopped making me excited as it gradually dawned on me that there really was no reason for anyone to travel back and forth, though the novel makes the Antari characters into some valued commodity and regularly has the two remaining ones delivering messages between the various Londons' monarchs. Why, I don't know and I don't think the author does, either.

A bit too much of the "one ring" syndrome with the Black London artifact, and not well done at that. Where Tolkien let's your imagination do its worst with the temptation that Sauron's ring presents, Schwab goes into detail that makes it ring silly.

The characters are OK (except, and I'm not joking, at one point one of them is described as "really wanting to be a pirate"), and the writing is better than most fantasy novelists-- though at times, and this isn't a bad thing per se, the writing seems more geared toward YA lit. That is, more simplistic than I would have thought at first.

All in all, read it if you liked Grossman's books and want something in a similar vein, but don't blame me if it disappoints. So much of the world building is good, and that alone is worth a star. I see that the author has a new book, a follow-up to this one, out in February. Not sure if I'll read it or not. I probably will. ( )

fiction (fantasy/magic, adventure). 1st in a trilogy but could also stand alone; terrific world-building with strong characters. ( )

Such is the quandary when it comes to magic, that it is not an issue of strength but of balance. For too little power, and we become weak. Too much, and we become something else entirely. ---- Tieren Serense. head priest of London Sanctuary
