I thought that due to the sectioned-up nature of this book I would read it a bit at a time around other commitments.

Instead, I was compelled to consume it in one go, because Poehler's chatty writing style echoes her speaking voice and is super readable. I kept thinking of Fran Drescher's autobiography [b:Enter Whining|489109|Enter Whining|Fran Drescher|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1387708436s/489109.jpg|2493755], which is similarly honest, straightforward, and open. I've reread Drescher's books many times and hope to reread Yes Please just as many. It's the kind of book that gives you a kick in the butt while simultaneously lifting you up and giving you a hug. I read this during an inpatient hospitalization and it’s a miracle I was allowed to be discharged after the fact. This book is so deeply unfunny. Anything having to do with pregnancy, motherhood, family, etc is a MAJOR hell fucking no for me, but to be fair my only other option than reading this was quite literally staring at a wall, so.. Also, her having to write a whole chapter about how she took accountability for offending a viewer with one of her bits and then including the apology letter and other correspondences in the book was…. a choice. ☺️ ( )

This was a quick read and enjoyable if you like Amy Poehler and followed her career. She seems pretty normal and likeable and this was a fine way to pass a few hours of my life.

Nothing to see here if you aren't already a fan. ( )

amy poehler's number one fan forever and ever. this is definitely one of the best, if not the best, memior audiobooks i've listened to. she inserted many add-libs. other guests including her mom and dad joined in to read, giving us their perspectives. "TV is OK in the bedroom, dinners don't matter that much if they are on the table each night, ... but always love and respect your spouse ... never take cheap stabs" this is the best advice messages. a big part of the enjoyment was the feeling of being WITH amy poehler and really getting to know her. she could read through a manual for a tractor and hold my attention. amy poehler has heart! she really is that girl you'd love to be best friends with. she is funny and tender and vulunerable and inspiring and compassionate and deeply appreciates her life. she expresses joy, is aware, values family and friends and working hard and honest and forgiveness and love. the best story.. hearing about when she was 8.5 months pregnant during one of the most memorable political years in history. she gave great advice when she talked about the difference of living your life from passion verses being attached to the results we manifest. she talked about protecting your own heart. not having to save others or fix their problems. but protect yourself too. and amy was always acknowledging other people - i think i love this quality about her best of all. she really is leslie knope ( )

I have to say that I read a lot of biographies and memoirs, and while many of them are open and honest, Yes Please is, I think, the first one I've read that simply felt like a conversation with a good friend. Amy Poehler is confident in who she is and what she has done in her life, and that's what comes through here in her book. I love Amy, and knew she'd write an excellent book. It's a great book! Loved it and read it in a day because I had trouble putting it down. Witty writer, funny and just lots of fun. I did take a break to get lunch but thats about it. ( )

This book is heavy. Perhaps that's because it's so firmly packed with wit and insight. Fans of Poehler and her offbeat characters expect her to be outrageous and there's some of that here, but mostly this is a sweet, funny memoir and a thoughtful look at what it takes to be a woman. In fact, there's lots of advice given here, and it's smart, the kind of stuff your favorite aunt would tell you, albeit, an aunt who once shot a moose on the "Weekend Update" set while rapping alongside Sarah Palin. She addresses how to treat your career (like a bad boyfriend); how not to torture other women about their life choices; ways to shut people up about your newly single status ("Hey, lady, I don't want to fuck your husband"). With so much to enjoy and absorb, you may even want to carry this book around, reread it, and underline pertinent-to-your-own-life sentences, which would be perfectly reasonable, except for the fact that it's so darn heavy.
