teen/adult fiction (star-crossed romance with magic). As the saying goes, "A fish and a bird can fall in love, but then where would they live?" at least PG-13 for adult situations (nudity and kissing, fighting), but you don't have to be an angsty 17-year-old to enjoy this story. ( )

A bird and a fish fall in love - in this case it’s a mermaid but semantics. A fantastical reimagining of this old saying mixed with a twist of Romeo and Juliet. Two traveling show families - Corbeaus and Palomas - are in the same town performing; decades old anger between them until an accident puts two of their young together, for better or worse. Simple yet compelling story with a captivating legend and characters you connect with. 📚📚📚📚 ( )

The writing's great, and I love the way Spanish and French words are weaved into the story.

Concerning the romance, I don't really see it for Lace and Cluck, their love I mean. :/ There were a lot of kiss scenes, but I didn't feel anything for them.

I suppose Cluck's my favorite character, but we got so little of his narrative. He's funny and the sad sack his family loves to kick around. Whoo, is it tough seeing his family treat him like Cinderella. HUGE Cluck SPOILER: this is some stuff straight from Maury. The grandpappy is the daddy!

On the other hand, Lace is kind of bland after she falls in love. It's surprising but I enjoyed reading about her applying make-up. Now, I liked Lace's dad. That's a guy with his own motivations who thinks with his own mind. To be honest, I didn't care about anybody else besides Cluck and Lace's dad.

Overall, not bad at all but I also wanted it to be over. Why? I don't like long drawn out misunderstandings, but anyone else should enjoy some of the plot twists this book brings. So, it's 2 stars for my enjoyment but a 3 for the story. ( )

I... I honestly still have no clue what I think of this book.

I hated the first half, and I loved the second half.

And I don't have the slightest clue what shifted.

Maybe I got used to the writing style. Because I sure wasn't liking it early on, but by the end I loved it. Maybe the characters grew on me. They started out very flat and... honestly I don't think they ever felt fully developed to me, but by the end I was so invested in them. Maybe the plot got more interesting.

I'm really not sure.

But I'm glad I read this book, and I definitely look forward to reading more from Anna-Marie McLemore.

What on earth did I just read?? I just... I don't even know what the heck this book even was. I did like it. I just need some time to precess the extreme weirdness that was this book.

It was beautifully written, and unique and... really freaking weird.

It took me 100-150 pages to warm up to it, but then all of a sudden I WAS IN LOVE, and putting it down was impossible.

Review and rating to come ( )

I loved this book. The prose is gorgeous, and I loved it's take on Romeo and Juliet, and the warring families. The main characters were likable. I did feel that the romance wasn't bad, but wasn't super engaging either, and the ending felt rushed. Overall, though I really enjoyed this book, and would recommend to any fan of magical realism.
